BASIC FORMAT • PARAGRAPH 1: introduces the thesis and directs the reader to the three main supporting subtopics. • PARAGRAPHS 2 – 4: individually restates the subtopics and provide supporting information. • PARAGRAPH 5: restates the main thesis idea and reminds the reader of the three main supporting ideas that were developed.

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH • General introduction • Many great civilizations have had an effect on our modern world. • Main claim or thesis • One of the greatest and most influential civilizations of the Asian region was the Assyrians. • Review of subtopics • The geographical location of their civilization, their well organized government, and their strong religious beliefs and social structure all combined to make the Assyrians on of the world’s great civilizations.

CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH • CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH • Review thesis statement • The area of Mesopotamia benefited greatly from the settlement of the Assyrians. • Summarize key points • The location offered an abundance of food and resources, while the organized government and advanced social structure provided the people with the security and time to develop a thriving culture. • Closing statement • However, as with many other great civilizations, Assyrian was not able to sustain its existence and was eventually attacked and overtaken.
