  4. Why do we have the AOAO meetings? • States Requirements [CME] • AOBOS CME Requirement • [required 15 Cat 1A AOA CME] • AOAO Requirements • Fraternity • Mentorships and Mentors • Now we are offering ACCME credit

CME Requirements2019-20212 types of diplomats • Non-Time Limited [grandfathered] • cme 120 hours • OCC not required • If they choose to do OCC then they follow the time limited diplomat path • Time limited [Everyone else] • AOBOS requires 60 cme • 15hrs need to be AOA cat 1A • OCC pathway • Diplomates who hold time-limited certifications must complete the Lifelong Learning/CME requirement in addition to the other components of OCC. • States Vary [you still need your required CMEs for your State] • CA requires 100 CME / 2 yrs

  8. Category 1A • Definition • AOA Category 1-A will be granted to attendees for formal education programs designed to enhance clinical competence and improve patient care. • These programs must be sponsored by an AOA accredited Category 1 CME Sponsor

Category 1 A Sponsor • Formal Osteopathic CME • Consisting of formal face to face programs that meet the category 1 quality guidelines, faculty requirements • Topics may be related to any of the 7 Core Competencies essential and critical to the development and maintenance of Osteopathic Physicians • 7 Osteopathic Core Competencies • OMM/ Philosophy [not a Recognized ACGME CC] • Medical Knowledge • Patient Care • Interpersonal & Communication Skills • Professionalism • Practice- Based Learning & Improvement • System-Based Practice

  10. Osteopathic Philosophy / OMM Demonstrate and apply knowledge of accepted standards in osteopathic manipulative treatment appropriate to the specialty. Remain dedicated to life long learning and to practice habits in osteopathic philosophy and OMM Lectures / Workshops on OMT, Osteopathic philosophy. Holistic medicine, integrative or alternative therapies • Oseteopathic Principles/ Tenets • Body is a UNIT [body, mind, spirit] • Body is Capable of self-regulation, self-healing, health maintenance • Structure & Function are reciprocally interrelated • Rational Treatment is based on these principles

Medical Knowledge • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of accepted standards of clinical medicine in the respective area • remain current with new development in medicine and participate in lifelong activities. • Topics can include any current medical therapy or relevant care. This is traditional CME.

  12. Patient Care • Demonstrate the ability to effectively treat patients • provide medical care that incorporates • the osteopathic philosophy, • patient empathy, • awareness of behavioral issues, • the incorporation of preventative medicine and health promotion.

  13. Interpersonal and Communication Skills • Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable you to establish and maintain professional relationships with • patients, • families, • other members of health care teams

Professionalism • Uphold the Osteopathic Oath in the conduct of your professional activities that promotes • advocacy of patient welfare, • adherence to ethical principles, • collaboration with health professionals, • lifelong learning, • sensitivity to a diverse patient population • be cognizant of physical and mental health in order to effectively care for patients

Practice Based Learning and Improvements • Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate methods of clinical practice • integrate evidence based medicine into patient care • show an understanding of research methods • improve patient care practices Current Research, Evidence Based Practice, Outcomes Based Topics

Objective Spine Upon completion of this session, through presentations and case study discussions, participants will have learned the effectiveness and latest techniques in Cervical HNP with Radiculopathy, Cervical Disc Replacement, Intraoperative Neuro-monitoring, the use of Perioperative Steroids to Reduce Dysphasia, Biologics in posterior lateral lumbar fusion, navigation systems for pedicle screw insertion, and robotics in spinal surgery. Participants will have also reviewed surgical options for Spondylolisthesis with Stenosis, advantages and disadvantages of repeat fusion, and discussed MIS Anterior and Lateral Complications. Trauma Sawbones Workshop/Luncheon Upon completion of the skills lab, the surgeon will understand the indications and uses of blocking screws in helping to reduce and stabilized distal femur fractures. Trauma Upon completion of this session, the participant will: 1) Have learned the latest surgical techniques and procedures to treat trauma related femoral neck fractures, IT hip fractures, difficult ankle fractures, distal humerus fractures; 2) Have discussed when to use open reduction internal fixation as a surgical option; 3) Have discussed when to use total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) or Hem-arthroplasty as a surgical option. • A paragraph or so stating what you anticipate your audience will learn or take away from your session.

How Do I get Speakers? • Your Colleagues • 100 Dollar Honoraria • Minimum 20 minute lecture/no max • Some sections give more for their speakers • There is asset fee schedule for other speakers • 15 points per topic/lecture • Toward Fellowship [currently for the DO] • Section Meetings • Volunteer list

Getting the Slides for Review Why • There is Change in the air! • We are working on getting the approval for ACCME being offered at the meeting • This will give our MD Lectures the ability to get CME Credit • This will allow outside MDs to register and attend our meetings and get CME credit • The next step is the ability to provide the CME to our PAs and NPs • This is an ACCME Requirement
