  2. Diminutives • In Spanish you can add the suffix -ito(a) to a noun in order to give it the meaning of “small” or “little”. It can also be used to show affection. Words with this suffix are called diminutives (diminutivos).  • abuelo → abuelito • perros → perritos • hermana → hermanita

  3. Diminutives • Now that you know what the suffix -ito/a(s) means, can you figure out the meanings of these words?  abuelita     gatito     Miguelito     hijita

  4. Diminutives •  Some very popular names are diminutives. What do you think the diminutives of these names are? Ana   Anita Carlos    Carlitos Paco  Paquito

  5. Diminutives • REMEMBER: • Used with NOUNS • Usually indicate small/little or affection • Have four endings (-ito, -ita, -itos, -itas)

  6. Augmentatives • In Spanish, you can add the –ísimo ending to an adjective in order to give it the meaning of “extremely”; this is similar to putting the word “muy” in front of an adjective. These words are called augmentatives. • grande → grandísimo • perezosa → perezosísima • ricos → riquísimos
