Statistics • Located in the northeast corner of Africa • Population (as of 7/07) - 80,335,036 • More than 3 times the size of New Mexico • Currency is the Egyptian pound • 71.4% of the population(15 and older) is literate • 2007 estimated population growth = 1.721% • Natural hazards: periodic droughts, flash floods, earthquakes, hot windstorms • Climate – hot dry summers and moderate winters

Political • Independence from the UK on February 28, 1922 • Capital city is Cairo • Form of government = republic • The executive branch of government consists of a chief of state (president), head of government (prime minister), and cabinet • The president is elected for a six-year term with no limits on the number of terms served • President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak has been in office since October 14, 1981. • Prime Minister Ahmed Mohamed Nazif in office since July 9, 2004. • The legislative branch is made up of the People’s Assembly and the Advisory Council

Cultural • Primary language = Arabic • French and English understood by educated • Religion • About 90% Islam (mostly Sunni) • About 10% Christian • Film industry • “Hollywood of the Middle East” • Censoring and funding issues • U.S. filming in Egypt – goes to Tunisia instead • Ancient Egyptian history • Pharaohs, mummies, hieroglyphics

  6. Economic • Most economic activity takes place in the northeast corner as a result of the fertile Nile valley • Government has to provide subsidies for basic needs • Increase in foreign direct investment • Natural gas as a potentially strong export

  8. “Egyptian government make ICTs a developmental priority” – Jan. 21, 2008 • Govt. has made information and communications technologies (ICTs) a developmental priority • Vastly improved an “antiquated” ICT infrastructure that had been in place since the early ‘90s • Example – People had to wait years to have a fixed phone line installed (with many being inadequate); now the wait is only a few weeks • Signed the WTO’s Basic Telecommunications Agreement (BTA) • Problem: lack of public participation in the ICT policy-making process • Makes “liberalisation a technocratic process without adequate public checks and balances. “ • Process driven by pressures of the global market

  9. “Political Blogger, Popular Novelist Jailed” – Feb. 7, 2008 • MosaadAboFagr, blogger and author, arrested on Dec. 26 for: “inciting the public to riot and damaging public properties” • Head of the “We want to live” movement – in support of Sinai Bedouins • Imprisoned for over 40 days – now extended for another 15 days • Wrote book about the severe human rights violations against the Sinai Bedouins, which the Egyptian govt. is trying to cover up – recently sold out at Cairo Book Fair • 12 Human Rights Organizations are asking the govt. to release him and uphold the constitution, which promises freedom of expression and rights to a fair trial

  10. “Egypt warns Palestinians not to breach Gaza border” – Feb. 7, 2008 • 2 weeks after the border was breached, Palestinians are warned to respect the border • Egypt closed the border on Feb. 3 • Clashes occurred between Egyptian border guards and Palestinian militants • Palestinians stuck in Egypt would be returned in organized groups • Foreign Minister Ahmed AboulGheit said anyone who breaches the border will have a foot broken • AboulGheit is asking Hamas to allow the Palestinian Authority to oversee part of the border
