  2. General • Most of the plays were produced at 1590~1613 • Formed one of literature’s greatest legacies • Wrote comedies, histories, tragedies • Made a wide social mix of people • Was very popular from the old days • Some people were skeptical to Shakespeare’s work

  3. Histories • Based on classical models • Richard III and Henry VI were the first recorded works • Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI, Henry VII • King John • Richard II, Richard III

  4. Comedies • in mid 1590s, wrote comedies based on Roman and Italian models • Later plays were mainly romantic and comical • Also mixed comedies to history • The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, etc

  5. Tragedies • Wrote tragedies until 1608 • Mostly about love, fatal errors • Sometimes also added supernatural elements • Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, etc
