National Laboratories are National Assets for ITS Research • National labs have significant research capabilities that – for the most part – have not been tapped into from the mobility perspective • Energy efficiency research and ITS/IntelliDrive mutually complement one another – hence, a joint cooperative DOE/DOT program to develop a system for super efficient commodity flow makes sense Energy Efficiency and Quality Mobility – The Formula for the Future

Glimpse of Past Major ITS Related Projects • Data Acquisition System for Crash Avoidance Research • Acquired vehicle, driver, and environmental data for NHTSA’s Office of Crash Avoidance Research • Dynamic Traffic Assignment – DTA • Incorporated the effects of ITS into traffic modeling (UTx/Austin, MIT) • Atlanta Driver Advisory System – ADAS • Installed navigation systems in 100 Fed-Ex trucks during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and was an independent evaluator of ADAS

Glimpse of Past Major ITS Related Projects (cont.) • Parking and Routing Information System – PARIS • Provided human factors support and functioned as an independent evaluator • Cell-Phone Tracking • Analyzed data from AirSage/Sprint and from a Ground-Truth Source (paid students driving with GPS to “drive with the flow”); sought to estimate travel time and speed on Knoxville arterials • Advanced Law Enforcement Response Technology – ALERT • Provided in-vehicle architecture to support wireless communications between officers, their vehicles, and police central

Glimpse of Past Major ITS Related Projects (cont.) • Driver Distraction Research • Looked at multiple and simultaneous in-vehicle information sources (navigation/routing, driver warnings, cell-phone and internet news) and their effect on driver distraction; utilized a driving simulator; also instrumented a new 1999 Dodge Intrepid with lane-tracking, heads-up displays, and night vision; conducted controlled runs to compare results • Real-Time Data for Emergency Evacuation • Deployed advanced inductive signature loop detector with wireless transmission capabilities to acquire speed/travel time estimates for evacuation emergencies; explored messages-to-driver capabilities • ITS Data Bus Consortium • Participated as one of the team members

ITS Deployment Analysis System - IDAS • Tracking and analyzing national ITS program deployments for USDOT since 1997 • ITS Deployment Statistics Website is a unique source of ITS information • ITS deployment in cities and states across the U.S. • Covers 108 metropolitan areas and all 50 states • Provides answers to almost 1,000 deployment questions sorted into 12 technology categories • 2,300 agencies are involved; response rates are typically 90% or greater www.itsdeployment.its.dot.gov

Plans for Commercial Motor Vehicle Roadside Technology Corridor • 70-mile corridor anchored by two inspection stations • 28,000 trucks per day • Currently – conducting wireless roadside inspection tests • Future plans – initiate a CMV IntelliDrive testbed • WiMax on rural freeways • DSRC in metro areas

Wireless Roadside Inspection • Goal is to improve motor carrier safety (reduction in accidents) by increasing compliance with technology • Instrumented motor carriers with data loggers and wireless technology • Continue to collect data • Vision is a change in motor carrier and driver behavior caused by a higher frequency of roadside safety inspections • Frequent driver and vehicle safety assessments ensure compliance • Safe and legal motor carrier transportation not hindered • Wide industry and public agency participation

Data From Trucks – IntelliDrive Opportunities • Contrary to what we think, we really do not know a lot about the performance of trucks on our highways • Technology investment decisions are being made without knowing what trucks really do • On-board data-bus is rich with data; this plus other on-board sensors can give a good profile of what trucks do • Trucks may be the vehicle that can catalyze greater user acceptance of IntelliDrive technologies

  12. hameleon …the power of change… From Software Defined Radio to Cognitive Radio… Software Defined Radio • Programmable hardware (radio) controlled by software • Serve multiple roles ─ perform different functions at different times • Tune to any frequency band across a large frequency spectrum • Download multiple waveforms and modulation schemes • Dynamically add new waveforms Cognitive Radio • Senses: acquires and maintains knowledge of its environment and user needs • Reasons: uses goal-oriented rules/reasoning to adjust adaptation goals • Adapts (reconfigurable): adjusts Rx/Tx parameters (frequency, modulation, power) in real-time to meet user requirements and goals • Learns: uses statistical signal processing and machine learning to reflect on past performance and achieve better performance • Plans/Acts: anticipates and schedules required future actions based on current and past conditions Future Cognitive Systems:“will converse with the user, anticipate their needs and adapt to meet them … ”
