  1. The Parable of The Good Samaritan

    The Context
  2. The Good Samaritan… is often taught as a moral lesson is often taught when wrenched out of context
  3. The Context…. Luke 10:25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
  4. The Mindset of the Lawyer… Was he interested in God’s Glory? Was he interested in serving others? Was he interested in expressing love or honor towards God?
  5. Who was the Lawyer Interested in? The Lawyer’s own self interest Luke 10:25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
  6. Was this Better than…. Asking for wealth? Asking to sit at the Lord’s right hand? … Yes…. But it was still self serving… albeit human
  7. Jesus Answers… Luke 10:26-28 He said to him, “What is written in the Law?How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”
  8. Analyzing the Lord’s Answer… Jesus leads the man to the Law… not grace
  9. Jesus is Consistent… Mark 10:17-19 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”…. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ”
  10. Jesus is Consistent… Matthew 19:16-17 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” ….If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”
  11. Why does Jesus lead the man to the Law… … and not grace? Because they each asked what can I do?
  12. The Mindset of the Lawyer… Not only is the question self serving… it is predicated upon the assumption that men can do something to warrant eternal life
  13. The Irony of Jesus’ Answer… He answers with the truth…. All you must do is perfectly obey the entire law in thought, word, and deed… without a single sin
  14. This is, of course… A Problem… Galatians 3:10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”
  15. The Context of the Parable of the Good Samaritan is… Jesus illustrating that man cannot do what he is required to do… be perfect before the law. Matthew 5:48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
  16. One of the Two Main Themes of… The Parable of the Good Samaritan is to… illustrate that man cannot live by the letter of the law and thus… cannot do anything to merit salvation
  17. Romans 7: 10,11 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
  19. The Lawyer Looks for a… Loophole… Luke 10:29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
  20. The Parable… Luke 10:30-33 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
  21. Luke 10:34-36 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”
  22. The End of the Lesson… Luke 10:37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
  23. General Considerations The man who was robbed was a Jew The men who failed to help him were also Jews The man who sacrificially gave to help the Jewish victim… was a Samaritan… a natural enemy
  24. The Lawyer was told to.. Love his Enemies Luke 10:37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
  25. Who are Our Neighbors? Our Enemies… and, obviously, our Friends as well… Thus… Everyone is our Neighbor
  26. Piecing it Together… What must we do to be saved? Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength 100% of the time in thought, word and deed --- loving everyone as yourself … 100% of the time… without a single exception EVER.
  27. What Must I Do to be Saved? Be a Good Samaritan to everyone at all times
  28. What, do you suppose, would the Lawyer be thinking now… In view of the Parable? Likely that he had no ability whatsoever to act as did the Samaritan.
  29. The Point of the Parable…. Is to Illustrate that there is only one thing we can do to Inherent Eternal Life… To be Perfect… Which is Impossible… Therefore… There is NOTHING we can do to inherent Eternal Life
  30. What Does This Say About Grace? Only ONE Man has ever lived Perfectly according to the Law --- Jesus Christ Only ONE Man is Righteous before God --- Jesus Christ There is only ONE Perfect Good Samaritan --- Jesus Christ
  31. Grace Is This…. Jesus Gave His Righteousness On to You… And He Took Your Sin Therefore… You Are Perfect --- Perfect In Christ
  32. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
