Radon hazards • Radon is a Class A Human Carcinogen and the Leading Cause of Lung Cancer in Non Smokers • ODH regulates radon professionals in the state of Ohio • There is no requirement to test or mitigate single family homes in the State of Ohio • Public awareness and education drive prevention

Proposed disclosure legislation • OARP seeks to drive legislation requiring radon disclosures in real estate transactions • Other states as a model for increasing radon awareness through legislation • Illinois- Radon Awareness Act • Passed in 2010 • Not a mandate • Disclosure form that must be given to all homebuyers in the state • Disclosure states what radon is and why its dangerous and that it is commonly found at high levels in the area

Proposed disclosure legislation • Since passing this Act, the state of Illinois has seen a 400% increase in radon testing and mitigation • Translates into less radon health risk, fewer radon induced lung cancer cases • Ultimately saves lives • OARP seeks to drive similar disclosure (not mandate) legislation

Proposed disclosure legislation • What have we done so far? • AARST Symposium- September, 2017 New Orleans, LA • OARP met with the Head of the Illinois Radon Program and the Current President of the Illinois Chapter of AARST to discuss the Illinois “blue print” and how we can apply it to Ohio • Met with AARST National Policy Advisor, President and Vice President • Met with the President of the New York Chapter of AARST who is currently trying to pass similar legislation in New York State

Proposed disclosure legislation • What Did We Learn? • Legislative Liaison is necessary for moving our agenda forward and making the connections to find a state rep who is willing to support our bill • We have met with lobbyists to see who can be helpful to our cause • We have established a partnership with the American Lung Association’s Policy Advisor
