  1. The Slaughter of Animals By Charles Quail, Lawrence Pinn & Kieran Morrison

  2. How many animals are killed worldwide per year? • Over 50 billion animals are killed worldwide every year. • In the US alone, over 10 billion animals are killed. • They are killed for things such as experimentation, food, ivory, fur and hunting. • Many animals kept for the purpose of food are kept in free range farms where they have lots of space to roam and are healthy but still the majority are kept in battery farms. 3. Pros of being a meat eater • Over 3 billion people are meat eaters. • If people didn’t eat meat, it would mean over 50 billion animals per year wouldn’t be killed. This would mean that farmers who raise animals for meat, would no longer be required to keep their animals. They would either lose their farms or would have to switch to arable farming or keep animals that have other uses other than meat. Consequently, species bred purely for meat would die out. • The production and sale of meat is one of the biggest parts of the World economy. If people stopped eating meat, hundreds of millions of people would be jobless and part of the economy would collapse.

  4. Affects of religion on meat eaters • Many religions such as Hinduism prohibit the consumption of certain types of meat. • There are other religions that offer some restrictions or no restrictions on types of meat that can be eaten and how they can be killed. • In both Islam and Judaism, not only are certain types of meat forbidden, but also, in order for permitted meats to be eaten, sometimes they must be killed in a specific manner to ensure ritual cleanliness. • For Muslims, there is Halal and for Jews, there is Kosher. • Kosher and Halal are similar. Symbols like this are certifications used to show whether the meat is Halal or not.

  5. Vegetarians believe that protein and iron obtained from meat is not always healthy. Animals have as much feelings as humans so why should they be ignored? Animal testing is useless, cures are not found and many animals inhumanely die. Meat dishes lack in nutrition and imagination. Vegetarian View on Animal Slaughter

  6. Space and time used to feed animals for meat could be used to feed starving humans around the world. Eating meat is unhealthier than vegetarian food. Breeding spaces for animals have ruined the natural landscape and areas of countryside and beauty. E.g. the Sahara. Vegetarian Views on Animal Slaughter

  7. Veganism • Veganism is a diet and lifestyle that doesn't use animals as food, clothing or any other purpose. • Most people become vegans for ethical reasons or moral conviction concerning animal rights and the environment.

  8. Pros • Vegans are significantly thinner than normal vegetarians and people who eat meet. • The blood pressure levels are low • The blood cholesterol levels are also low. • These factors contribute to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. • The lower body weight can also be linked to a lower risk of cancer and diabetes.

  9. Cons • Some vegans (those who do not eat a good balance of healthy food) end up having low levels of iron in their blood causing them to become tired or sick. • Vegans can sometimes find it hard to find food and have to make a lot of it themselves. • Menus may not have vegan options or there may be hidden animal products in foods (such as lactose, casein and other things). • Vegans also can’t wear clothes made from animals such as woollen jumpers or leather shoes and watch straps. • There are also animal products in shampoo, soap and tooth paste making life even harder for vegans.

  10. Our opinion • In our opinion we think that veganism is a very good way to go about reducing the slaughter of animals and also a good way to improve your health as long as your meals are balanced.
