Why Is Documentation Important • It is important that you document any source of information you use in any part when writing an essay, report, research paper or other document: • Failure to site sources of information is a form of academic dishonesty called PLAGIARISM. • Plagiarism can result in different degrees of penalties depending on the where it occurs.

  3. At the High School level, plagiarism is common as students are just beginning to develop their research and writing skills. • Awareness of plagiarism is important. • Failure to credit others for their work is in effect theft of intellectual property. • At the high school level, this would likely result in a less than desirable grade.

  4. At the college/university level, plagiarism is dealt with much more severely: • At minimum, you could FAIL a class if found guilty of plagiarism. • Colleges have several software programs that scan students’ documents to look for evidence of plagiarism. -At some universities, plagiarism could result in expulsion from a program or even the entire school. -Plagiarism incidents become part of your permanent academic record.

  5. At the professional level, plagiarism can result in legal action and/or civil fines or even criminal law suits!

  6. How Can You Avoid Plagiarism • Avoiding plagiarism is easy…..just make sure that when you quote information that is obtained from a source other than common, everyday knowledge, you provide • APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION • of the source of information.

How Do I Properly Document Information? • There are several methods for documenting information used in written documents. • MLA – Master Language Association • MLA is generally used in non-science fields. • English teachers love MLA! • APA – American Psychological Association • APA is generally used in the science related fields.

  8. APA Style Documentation • Years ago, when writing a research based paper, the writer had to provide documentation of the information ON THE PAGE IT WAS USED. An old method called “footnotes” was used….these were reference information placed at the bottom of the page. • Sometimes there was more documentation on the page than actual writing. • If the same source was used again, the documentation had to be repeated on every page it appeared on.

Modern writing now uses what is known as PARENTHETICAL DOCUMENTATION. • In this method, when information is used, a parenthesis is placed at the end of the information BEFORE THE PUNCTUATION…..be it at the end of a single sentence or an entire paragraph of information. • In the parenthesis, the LAST NAME OF THE AUTHOR and the PUBLICATION YEAR of the information is given. • At the end of the document a WORK CITED PAGE is created with all the reference information, IN A VERY SPECIFIC FORMAT, provided.

EXAMPLES • Each year, more than 3,000 new cases of Autosomal Recessive RyR2 Cardiac Mutation are diagnosed in the United States (Johnson, 2011). • This information obviously IS NOT common knowledge, so the author of the information source is being credited. • Here, the authors last name is JOHNSON, and the information was first published in 2011. • On the Work Cited page, full documentation information will be found.

How Do I Create a Work Cited Page • The parenthetical documentation portion within the paper is easy: • (Author’s Last Name, Year of Publication) • Creating the Work Cited Page is a little more involved: • In years past (and you still can) a writer would purchase an APA Style Publication Manual. • The manual would provide all types of templates for documenting various information sources.

Now, there are a number of online sites that will help you. • We will use http://citationmachine.net • You choose the information source type: • Printed book, Journal, Webpage, etc. • Enter the required information. • The citation machine will create the reference. • Copy/Paste the reference to your Work Cited page. • Notice citations use a HANGING INDENTATION…the first line of the citation starts at the margin, but additional lines of the SAME CITATION are tabbed one indentation. • Finally, put all references in ALPHABETICAL ORDER. • Sometime, you may not have a piece of requested information…if not leave it BLANK and complete as much as you can. • At the top of your page, center the title “WORK CITED”

  13. PRACTICE PROBLEMS • Open http://citationmachine.net • Open a BLANK WORD document. • Read the following examples, determine the source type, enter the information, make a reference, then copy/paste it into you word document. • Print your document and turn in.

Practice #1 • You quoted information from an article written by Betty Rodgers for Scientific American Magazine in July, 2010, with the title, “How Can America Overcome the Energy Crisis Facing the Next Generation”. The issue was number 7 of volume 44, and the article was on pages 19 through 21.

  15. Practice #2 • You obtained information on nuclear reactors from www.wikipedia.org. The title of the webpage was Nuclear Reactors. No author is cited in the article, which was last modified on December 31, 2011.

  16. Practice #3 • You read a blog entry on Amy’s Insights where the topic was “Can America Win the Obesity Battle?” which was published October 14, 2012. The blog’s author is Amy Cravens and the URL is www.blogspot.com/amysinsights

  17. Practice #4 • You quotes information from an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) written by Michael Timmons entitled “Antibiotic Resistance and Antibiotic Overuse: Is There a Correlation?”. This article appeared on pages 55-62 of the September, 2011, issue which was issue 9 of volume 144, which you obtained from www.jama.edu.

  18. Practice #5 • You were fortunate enough to be able to obtain an interview with Dr. Anna McKinney, Director of Nuclear Mathematics at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Research Facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. You made the video recording on July 18, 2012. You titled the interview “Nuclear Energy and America’s Future” and posted the finished video to You Tube at www.youtube.com/AmericasNuclearFuture
