  2. Facts about the Caroni swamp • The Caroni Swamp is the largest mangrove wetland in Trinidad and Tobago. It is located on the west coast of Trinidad, south of Port of Spain and northwest of Chaguanas, where the Caroni River meets the Gulf of Paria.

  3. Facts about the Caroni Swamp continued… • The Caroni Swamp is an important tourist attraction and provides important habitat for the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimusruber), one of the national birds of Trinidad and Tobago.

  4. Facts about the Caroni Swamp continued… • Tourist on cruise ships docked in Port-of-Spain visit the swamp.

  5. Facts about the Caroni swamp continued… • Both serious birders and vacationers come to the swamp just before sunset to see thousands of Scarlet Ibises flying in to roost.

  6. Facts about the Caroni swamp continued… • Almost all of the Caroni Swamp Scarlet Ibises feed in neighboring Venezuela, some 11 miles away. However, there are a few who stay closer to home.  

  7. Facts about the Caroni swamp continued… • Like flamingos and roseate spoonbills, the diet of the scarlet ibises gives them their rich color. If they stop eating their favorite crabs, then they lose their color.
