  3. The Beginning of the National Hockey League • All started in small Canadian Hard Working Towns • Usually players earned more money playing hockey than normal jobs • Good players became well known • They played in the NHA (National Hockey Association)

  4. A New League is Born • This league didn’t last long as world war I came around. Many of the players were shipped to Europe. • On November 26th 1917, a new league was agreed upon. The NHL • It consisted of 6 teams to start

  5. “The Original Six” • Montreal Canadians • Boston Bruins • Detroit Red Wings • Toronto Maple Leafs • New York Rangers • Chicago Black Hawks • (First Solid Teams)

  6. Safety Safety quickly became an issue in the NHL • Pads were very poor • And Players got very aggressive towards each other • Fighting in hockey started

  7. Improvements • Equipment improved greatly • Rules became more strict (fighting however, is legal in the NHL)

  8. Growth in the NHL • The National Hockey League grew a lot over the years • When it first began, the most a player would make was about $1000 a season Now it’s about $10 Million a season • There are now 30 teams in the NHL (24 in the United States, 6 in Canada)
