Biography • Born June 28, 1577 - • Know for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. • Ruben was Knighted by both Philip IV, king of Spain, and Charles I, king of England. • Ruben lived in Antwerp where he received a humanist education, studying Latin and classical literature. • In 1600, Ruben traveled to Italy. Where he was influenced by Titians’ Art work. • 1601 Ruben traveled to Rome by Florence. Here he studied Greek and Roman Art, also copied works of Italian masters. • 1603 Ruben traveled to Spain on a diplomatic mission. Delivering gifts from the Gonzaga's to the court of Philip III. • In 1604 he returned to Italy for the next 6 years where Ruben painted numerous amounts of paintings. The impact from Italy to him was great. • In 1610, come back Antwerp from Italy into a new house and studio that he designed. This house is now Rubenshuis Museum. • Died May 30, 1640.
