  2. The End of Terror (last lesson) Robespierre had to go Executed July 1794 – Reign of Terror ends People were tired of all of this revolution! TOPIC: THE DIRECTORY • 1795, moderate members of the National convention drafted a new plan for government – the Directory

  3. A period of order (finally!) Finally! Order! • Power: upper middle class (bourgeoisie) • Legislature: Two-house • Executive body: Directory (made up of men) • corrupt, but gave order • They also found the right general to command France’s armies – Napoleon Bonaparte!

NAPOLEON’S RISE TO POWER • Napoleon seizes power • Coup d’Etat – “blow to the state” • 1799: The Directory had lost political and public support • Napoleon leads the people and his troops in a coup d’etat • Coup: A sudden seizure of power • After the coup… • Instead of a Directory, the new lawmakers had 3 consuls • Napoleon made himself one, “first consul”, and basically became a dictator

NAPOLEON’S RISE TO POWER • Recap: Why did France go to war in the first place during the FR? • Now these foreign Kings were worried about Napoleon • 1799 – Austria, Britain, and Russia all had one goal in mind: REMOVE NAPOLEON! • Napoleon: Brilliant general • Eventually all three nations signed a peace treaty • 1802: Europe is at peace for the first time in 10 years!
