  1. A life outside hospital Gavin Harding & Zandrea Stewart Winterbourne View Joint Improvement Programme

  2. Moving on, Making Change Happen, Together • Every single person in the room today wants to contribute making change happen • Everyone in the room believes that people with a learning disability, autism, mental health and behaviour that challenge should be listened to and heard • We can all play a part in our own way to influence and drive the changes • In my role as one of two principal advisors and the autism lead for ADASS I am in the privileged position to act as a bridge between local and national, linking into your structure to support the changes and tackle the challenges

  3. The vision Everyone, with no exception, deserves a place to call home. Person by person, area by area, the number of people with learning disabilities and autism in specialist hospitals and Assessment and Treatment Units will permanently reduce to the point it will become extremely rare for a person to be excluded from the right to live their life outside of a hospital setting.

  4. A Hospital is NOT a Home • People of all ages currently in inpatient care = 3250 people: • NHS Unit - 1850 • Independent - 1446 • Learning Disability Census 2013

  5. Priorities – For local planning CO – PRODUCTION = US ALL WORKING TOGETHER

  6. The Engagement Strategy Group • Co-chair of the Engagement Strategy group • The Engagement group is made up of people who have experience of the issues either personally, as a family member or professionally. • We are there to make sure people with learning disabilities, their families and allies are involved in the work of the Joint Improvement Programme. • We have created an Engagement Reference Group for other people who want to get involved – will you become members?

  7. Improving lives now and for the future Supporting ‘the Great Escape’ and promoting positive lives • There have been a lot of bad experiences but we need to start sharing positive experiences too so that we can learn about what works • Examples of what can make a difference includes: • Getting the right support at the right time • Developing the confidence of young people and adults with learning disabilities & autism • Working together, sharing good ideas

  8. What you can do? Locally 1. Who are your local area leads? • Ask to see your local joint plan • Ask about how you can get involved Areas should be working across the local partnership and supporting working together across all ages, including people, their friends and family. Nationally • Sign up to the Engagement Reference Group • Share your experiences, what has helped you to have a life and away from hospital? • If you’d like to tell us, and give us your ideas complete a short survey or send Angela an email? • Sign onto our new Face book page & New webpages • Get involved and follow us on Twitter • Let us know if you want to be a part of Improving Lives
