  1. English Colonial in North America Objective #2

  2. English arrive in North America The Settlement at Jamestown • In 1606, a company of London investors received from king James a charter to found a colony in north America. In 1607 they reached the land and claimed it theirs; they named it Jamestown in honor of their king. • When they barely started Jamestown, it started off roughly. Everyone was focusing on gold than planting crops in order to survive. • But soon, Jamestown became England's first permanent settlement in north America.

  3. Puritans Create a “New England” • In 1620, a group known as Pilgrims founded a second English colony, Plymouth, in Massachusetts. • Since colonist were persecuted for their religious beliefs, a group known as Puritans sought religious freedom from England's Anglican church. • The puritans wanted to build a model community that would set an example for others to follow. Even though they started off roughly, they eventually took hold.

  4. The Dutch Found New Netherland • Following the English and French into north America were the Dutch. In 1609, Henry Hudson sailed west; he was in search for a northwest sea route to Asia. Even though he didn’t find it, he explored three waterways that were later named after him—the Hudson River, Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait. • The Dutch claimed and established a fur trade with the Iroquois Indians. In 1621, the Dutch government granted for the company permission to colonize and expand trade; the Dutch holdings in North America became known as New Netherland.

  5. The Struggle for North America The English Oust the Dutch • In 1664, the English king, Charles II, granted his brother, the Duke of York, permission to drive out the Dutch. • When Duke’s people arrived at Netherlands, the Dutch surrendered without firing a shot; The Duke of York claimed the colony for England and renamed it New York. • By 1720, about 1.2 million English settlers lived in 13 colonies from Maine to Georgia.

  6. England Battles France • The English soon wanted more land, so they pushed farther west into the continent. By doing this, they collided with France's north American holdings. As they expanded, France and England became to face each other. • In 1754 a argument over land claims on Ohio valley led to a war between the British and French on the north American continent. This conflict became known as the French and Indian War. The war became part of a larger conflict known as the Seven Years’ War.

  7. England Battles France • The British Colonists defeated the French in 1763 with the help of the British Army. The French surrendered their North American holdings. • As a overall result, the British seized control of the eastern half of North America.

  8. The 13 Colonies • Virginia • Massachusetts • New Hampshire • Maryland • Connecticut • Rhode Island • Delaware • North Carolina • South Carolina • New Jersey • New York • Pennsylvania • Georgia Very many nice men came running down North Street, not needing police guards.
