Understanding Homilies: Meaning and Examples

A homily is a sermon focused on a Biblical topic, often inspirational and nondoctrinal. It's akin to a lesson or lecture, and is typically delivered in a way that aims to inspire or reflect on moral values. For instance, parents frequently share homilies, which can sometimes feel overwhelming to their children. These teachings help convey lessons about life and ethics. In everyday conversation, you might remark on how a parent's homily left a lasting impression, or how you hope to avoid the repetitive nature of it.

  1. Homily Homily a noun is a sermon, usually on a Biblical topic and usually of a nondoctrinal nature; an inspirational saying or cliché. Lesson and lecture are two synonyms for homily. One exampleof homily is that parents, adults in general, give so many homilies that you wish you didn’t have to listen to. One way I could use homily in my everyday life is that my parents enrage me with their homilies.
