  2. Our stories are your stories! • Our mission is to reflect all voices and views in our region, especially those under-represented in other media.

  3. We give you timely news, wildfire and emergency alerts

  4. Our origin is in the 2007 wildfires • Our editor was a reporter for a local paper. At midnight, she got e-mails from people trapped in a small town. heir phone lines had burned down and fire was all around them. Nobody was reporting critical emergency news.

  5. We started in 2008 and grew like wildfire! • Our first grant was in 2008 from Foundation for Change. Now we are part of the nonprofit 501c3 Heartland Coalition. • Today, we’re the 2nd most widely read news site in San Diego County, with 5 million hits and 150,000 visitors each month. • Viejas sponsors our wildfire and emergency alerts, helping us keep you safe and informed.

  6. Our watchdog journalism team has won over 40 major awards • Best general interest website (S.D. Press Club) • Best investigative reporting (S.D. Press Club) • Media Award 2012 (League of Women Voters) • Best environmental, multicultural and general interest news (S.D. Press Club) • James Julian Memorial Award for best community reporting (Society of Professional Journalists)

  7. Our coverage also includes the best of East County

  8. Our reporting is making big impact! Our coverage played a key role in….. • Stopping the county from eliminating community planning groups • Saving Palomar State Park from closure

  9. We also helped to… • Convince FEMA to drop refund demands to wildfire victims • Provide nonpartisan voter information and a candidate forum • Require local boards to comply with open government laws, including repealing an illegally imposed water rate hike • Save lives during wildfires with timely alerts and reporters on the scene—even at midnight

  10. Our stories draw national attention • For instance, our coverage on impacts of wind energy projects here have been viewed around the world

  11. We’ve hosted community events: • Outstanding citizens awards • Celebrate East County • SummerFest at Mission Trails • Candidate forum for Grossmont Union High School Board race
