  4. Why learn a world language? • Languages are invaluable tools in our global society—increased job opportunities • Cultural pluralism • Increased awareness of native language and culture • Cognitive development: mental flexibility, creativity, high order thinking skills

  5. Why learn German? • German may be your heritage language • For business, culture, friendship and travel • Germany is the world’s largest exporter and a major trade partner w/U.S. • Over 200 million Europeans speak German as a first language • German improves the understanding of English • German students are likely to score higher on SAT and ACT tests for college • German is an international language in technology, chemistry, medicine, music, philosophy and art. • One in ten books published in the world is in German • 25% of the U.S. population claims German ancestry • Germans travel more than any other nationals on Earth—you are likely to meet them everywhere!

  7. How to learn a WL successfully • Be organized • Keep vocabulary lists, flashcards • Review frequently: a little everyday • Trial and error: make lots of mistakes and learn from them • Don’t fall behind! • Keep an open mind and have fun with it

What to expect in German I • Lots of listening and speaking in German • Group work and pair work • Frequent homework (10-15 min. per night) • Lots of vocabulary • A variety of teaching techniques are employed for various learning styles (visual, auditory, tactile) • An emphasis on proficiency—using performance based assessments and demonstrating what you have learned.

  9. What to bring every day • Textbook KommMit! • 2 Workbooks (in German binder) • Notebook or loose leaf paper (in German binder) • Pencil • Colored correcting pen or marker • A respectful, responsible and accountable attitude.

  10. Grades are based on… • Quizzes and tests (speaking isassessed more than writing to reflect what we value) • Completed homework (checked often) • Class work • Projects • Participation (50points each quarter)

German Club is fun! • German Club –first meeting after school on Monday 9/16, first event “Black Forest Adventure,” date to be determined at first meeting. • Club T-shirt for everyone who joins (included in $20 yearly dues—due by Monday, 9/16) • Culture Days (Oktoberfest, St Nikolaustag, Karneval, etc.) • Food, music, dance! • Active, “hands on” experiences

Delta Epsilon Phi • National German Honor Society— --open to all German Club members in good standing (min. 5 events during the year) --must maintain a 85% average in German all year and in all other subjects. --students will be tapped in early May --induction held end of May --must re-qualify each year for membership
