  2. Sacrament • A Sacrament is an invisible sign of God’s invisible grace. • Sacraments bring us closer to God. • There are seven Sacraments: Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick.

  3. Sacraments of Initiation • Baptism • Eucharist • Confirmation

  4. Baptism • Baptism makes us members of the Catholic Church. It is the first Sacrament Catholics receive (some as babies, some as children, and some as adults). • Baptism has symbols: • The Holy Water - • The Paschal Candle - • White Garment – symbolizes Jesus’ resurrection from the tomb • Sacred Chrism – consecrates everybody to Jesus

  5. Members of a Community At Baptism, parents and Godparents promise to bring children up to follow Jesus. A name is given to the child (or adult) as part of this welcoming ceremony into God’s Community.

  6. Water in Baptism • Priest pours water over the head of the child and blesses the child (or adult) in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. • After this happens, the child or adult is given the miracle of a new life as Jesus’ follower.

  7. Explanatory Rites • After baptism with Holy Water come the explanatory rites: 1. Christmation – priest consecrates using oil 2. Priest hands a candle of light lit from the Paschal candle 3. White garment clothing symbolizing new dignity as a child of God

  8. Holy Communion • Eucharist or Holy Communion is the Sacrament that can (and should) be received frequently. • The word Eucharist means thanksgiving in Greek. We give thanks to God for every good thing we enjoy in life. • We also celebrate the Eucharist because Jesus told us to “do this in memory of me.” Which means he wants us to keep his memory alive.

  9. What does the Sacrament of the Eucharist include? • The Sacrament of the Eucharist always includes: • The reading aloud of Scripture • Prayers of thanksgiving to God • Consecration of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ • Receiving Christ’s Body and Blood

  10. What happens when bread and wine are consecrated? • Only a priest or bishop can consecrate the bread and wine for the Eucharist. • The Holy Spirit comes on the gifts that are offered to God and changes them into the Body and Blood of Christ. • Through consecration, the Sacrament of Eucharist makes you one with Christ when you receive Holy Communion.

  11. How to receive Communion • You can receive the Eucharist in your hands or on your tongue. • After the priest or the Eucharistic Minister gives you the Eucharist, you say AMEN.

  12. Confirmation • Confirmation is the third Sacrament initiation and can only be received once. • The Confirmation Rite is administered by a bishop or, by a priest appointed by the bishop. • Two things happen during Confirmation: 1. The candidate’s forehead is anointed with the Sacred Chrism. 2. The minister places his hand on the candidate’s head and says: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”

  13. Gifts of the Holy Spirit • During the Sacrament of Confirmation, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit which help us show that Jesus is present in us. • The Gifts or Fruits of the Holy Spirit are:
