The Flag • The current design of the flag dates from the Union of Ireland and Great Brita • in in 1801.It consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron Saint of England), edged in white superimposed on the Cross of St Patrick (patron Saint of Ireland), which are superimposed on the Saltire of Saint Andrew.

  4. The Government • British Universities are independent self-governing institutions, though most receive funds from the central government.

  6. OFFICAL NAME • United Kingdom and Great Britain and Northern Ireland. • The Head of the States is the Queen or King. She or He inherits the title and so is not elected by the people. The government is made up of members of parliament who are elected.

  7. The Covent Gardens • The Covent Gardens is surrounded by theatres restaurants and shops. Street entertainers regularly perform for passers by. This is a very popular tourist attraction.

  8. UNITED KINGDOM HISTORY • The United Kingdom was formed in 1801. It was made up of England, Scotland , Wales and the whole of Ireland. After 1921 Southern Ireland was no longer part of the union. England , Scotland and Wales are collectively known as Great Britain. • The Bank of England was founded in 1694. • The UK was the first nation two become an Industrial one. • The United Kingdom’s fishing fleet is the fifth largest in the EU.

  10. Language • The official language is English but there are some other languages spoken too. Like the Gaelic language which is still used in parts of the Scottish highlands and islands and there is the Welsh language which is spoken in some parts of Wales. • Fact: People who move to Britain are often Bilingual. Indian and Pakistani children learn their own languages as well as English.

  11. Money • British money is divided into pounds and pence, 100 pence equal 1 pound. • 20£=Michael Faraday (famous scientist) • 10£=Charles Dickens (famous writer)
