  1. Welcome to the 2014-2015 BAMM Refresher Training

  2. What is the Academic Catalog?

  3. Build a Major Map (BAMM) www.asu.edu/bamm majormaps@asu.edu – Jennifer, Barb and Lauren help.asu.edu – search “BAMM”

  4. 2013 - 2014 Top 10 Major Map Errors Flagged courses: Courses on major maps which do not exist The two prevailing situations were: • Course(s) haven’t been requested in Curriculum Changemaker • OR • Course(s) have been requested but missed the implementation deadline (131 maps) Missing pre-requisites or co-requisites Students will not be able to register for required courses (115 maps) Check pre-requisite box ( ) & preview in degree search Example with MAE 213, MAE 400 and MAE 463 Missing critical courses in terms 1-4 (1A-4B for online major maps) (41 maps)Missing necessary courses in terms 5-8 (5A-8B for online maps) (77 maps) (i.e. Courses that are prerequisites or are sequential in nature)

  5. 2013 - 2014 Top 10 Major Map Errors Major map does not match graduation audit (Must match for 8 semester tracking) (>70 maps) Upper Division courses in terms 1-4 (53 maps) Please avoid when possible as this can cause issues for our transfer students. If unavoidable, please provide justification when submitting. Having a track/group requirement in term(s) that doesn’t match the title of the course lists below. Completion checks that are built incorrectly or are unnecessary: • Course(s) not on major map or has changed numbers • Course(s) are in a later term than the completion check • Course(s) are optional in an earlier term • Having a completion check (critical or non-critical) for a course which is marked critical in a previous term • Having a non-critical completion check for a non-critical course

  6. 2013 - 2014 Top 10 Major Map Errors Poorly written multiple course requirements • A 3 course requirement listed in 4 terms (i.e. students is asked to take 12 units from a 9 unit course list) • A 5 course requirement, one of which is a GS course, is listed in 3 terms.  Students can complete 3 courses without ever having taken the GS requirement. • A 4 course requirement that includes a General Studies (i.e. BIO 201 or BIO 202 or CHM 116 or SG/SQ) that repeats in several terms. The student could take other SG/SQ courses every term and never complete the other required courses.

  7. 2013 - 2014 Top 10 Major Map Errors Unlinked requirement in term(s) with no details regarding which courses fulfill that requirement Rather than just having, “See Advisor” recommend either adding: • A track/group of courses that can fulfill this requirement (preferred option) • OR • A link to an accurate/up-to-date website which provides a list of courses that will satisfy that requirement Omnibus courses listed as required courses From 2013 – 2014 AY and on, specific omnibus courses (194, 294, 394, 494) should not be required on a major map. This applies to terms 1-8 and track groups.

  8. 2013 - 2014 Honorable Mentions Notes built on the requirements that are meant for students

  9. 2013 - 2014 Honorable Mentions Not checking the link for catalog & prerequisite changes Course titles can change & need to be updated

  10. 2013 - 2014 Honorable Mentions Courses on major map that no longer exist (inactive) or have changed numbers Check this by hovering over a course when previewing in degree search

  11. 2013 - 2014 Honorable Mentions Submitting major maps to Provost Review level and then recalling themThis requires us to re-review the whole major map again (Already have over 400 major maps to review) Including something on the checksheet (left side of sequencing view), but not including it in the termsPlease keep checksheets organized and delete old requirements that are no longer used on major map. Have more GS on the major map than is necessary (i.e. lower division HU in terms 1, 2 and 4) Providing links in the major map that are no longer functional, are not up-to-date or are unlinked

  12. 2013 - 2014 Top 10 Major Map ErrorsProvost Office Review Map with no problems:15 -30 minutes each Map with a few problems:45 minutes each Map with a many problems (multiple pre-req problems, courses listed which didn’t exist, note problems): 1  - 1.5 hours each Map with the most  problems:  (i.e. Multiple pre-req problems, requirements listed as notes, redundant notes, multiple upper division courses listed as required in terms 1-4, courses listed which did not exist, courses listed with changes which had not yet been approved  (because request had missed submission deadline by department), multiple course sequence being split into even more courses).  1.5 – 2 hours each

  13. 2014 - 2015 Top 10 Errors

  14. 2014-2015 Major Maps The major map represents the ideal path for students to complete the major in 8 terms. Not the “possible” path for every student. What does this mean? First term math is your preferred math – do not build in pre-reqs. Have your DARS encoder encode pre-reqs “behind the scenes”. Do not follow a non-critical course with a critical completion check in a later term. • Because completion checks are checked at the end of the term this doesn’t allow us to determine if the student is enrolled in the right courses at the start of the term.

  15. Curriculum Checksheets (i.e. the left hand side) Build requirements like your DARS audit. Example Name Categories (Business Core, Technical Electives etc.) Total number of required hours • Build one requirement (Elective 9 hours) • Drag into multiple terms and change hours (3 in term 1 etc.) Delete requirements not used on sequencing side. Use validation at the bottom of checksheet. Why? Helps you reconcile your major map and DARS audit. Helps DARS encoder actually encode your major map in U.Direct. Helps with reporting.

  16. 2014 - 2015 Online Major Maps ASU Online: Critical and necessary requirements should be listed in ASU Online major maps. Remember that ASU Online has Department functionality. • ASU Online and the Academic Department must agree on curriculum before College submits to Provost level in BAMM. Due date for ASU Online major maps is also November 1, 2013.

  17. 2014-2015 Major Maps Turn on your email notifications to receive notice when a major map reaches your level.

  23. Proposed Major Maps Proposed major maps were copied over to 14-15 along with all of the other major maps on Monday, September 9th. If you are working on proposed major maps, please make sure you are making the changes in the 14-15 catalog year. If you have made changes to proposed major maps since last Monday, please let us know so we can copy over your updated proposed major map to 14-15. We will be deleting the proposed major maps from 13-14 early next week.

  24. Thank you! Thank you very much for attending our training session! Please know that we are here to assist you through the major map process. Contact us with any questions or concerns.
