  2. Biography • Benjamin McLane Spock was born on May 2, 1998 in New Haven, Connecticut. His parents names were Benjamin Ives Spock and Mildred Louise Stoughton Spock.

  3. Early Year Facts • Benjamin was one of six children. He took care of his younger siblings, he changed diapers, fed and babysat his siblings. Benjamin’s mother ran a strict yet loving household, while his father was a prominent lawyer. Benjamin’s education was private school variety.

Education • Along with being apart of private schools for his life he attended Yale from 1921 to 1925 majoring in english literature • He began medical school at Yale in 1925 but transferred to Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1927 • He dedicated his studies to children and Psychiatry

  5. Theory • Spock’s purpose was not to advocate a theory but to tell parents what children are like • He was the first pediatrician to study psychoanalysis to try to understand children's needs and family dynamics.

Theory • His ideas about childcare influenced several generations of parents to be more flexible and affectionate with their children, and to treat them as individuals. • Spock stated, “Parents have to be responsible for their children, not only their safety but the building of their character… they have to give their children guidance constantly”

Life Span • He was born May 2, 1903 • He is arguably the most influential pediatrician of all time • Upon his death in 1998, Dr. Spock was fondly remembered by millions of people as being a warm, passionate, and involved person, constantly working to cause positive change for children and for future generations.
