The significant distinction between place value and face value is that place value assigns a digit based on its location in a number. In contrast, face-value assigns a digit’s actual value. A number’s face value is fixed and cannot be modified. However, its place value varies depending on the digit’s location. Face Value The real value of a digit in a number, regardless of its position, is known as face value. A digit in a number has the same face value as the digit itself. For example, in the number 45634, the number ‘3’ has a face value of 3. Place Value A digit’s place value in a number gets determined by its location. As we proceed from right to left, the size of the place value grows. It indicates that the digit on the far left of any integer has the highest place value. The value of each location in a number can get expressed as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, and so on in increasing order. To get the place value of any digit, multiply its face value by its position value. As an example, consider the following: We will start by looking at the face value of the digit 6 in the number 9673. After that, we multiply it by the value of the digit’s location, i.e., digit 6 has a position value of 100. Therefore, by multiplication, we get the place value of 6 in 9673 as 600. The place value of any digit changes according to its position in the number. We may also express a number in expanded form using the manner outlined above by treating it as the sum of all its place values. 1/8
