The Impact of Technology on Curriculum Reform and Student Preparation

Technology plays a pivotal role in reshaping curriculum by shifting focus from traditional mechanics to problem-setting and solution interpretation. This change emphasizes the modeling process, better aligning education with real-world applications. Incorporating technology in education prepares students for a technologically advanced future, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary for success in their careers. The Interdisciplinary Core Mathematics CRAFTY Curriculum highlights these trends and encourages educators to embrace technological tools in teaching.

  1. Technology is the driving force in curriculum reform and is also a source of controversy. The ability of technology to provide visualization, numerical solutions and approximations, closed form symbolic solutions, and iterations has shifted curricula from focusing on mechanics and techniques to focusing on setting up problems and interpreting solutions. In short, technology has refocused curricula on the modeling process and away from the solution process…Another strong reason for incorporating technology in our core-course presentation is to prepare our students for the technological world in which they will graduate.
