Early Life How would you describe Poe’s mother and father? What important events happened in young Edgar’s life by the time he turned three?
What is tuberculosis? Now the disease is very rare, because of advances in antibiotics and proper hygiene. In the 1800s, the disease was deadly. It is an infection of the lungs, and was very contagious (can be passed through coughing) during the years Poe was alive. Symptoms include weakness, weight loss, fever, coughing, sweating, and more. Robert Koch, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1905, is credited with discovering the bacteria that caused tuberculosis, and through his discoveries we’ve been able to control this disease.
