Unit 1 Learning Objectives: The Needs Assessment • Define the term ‘needs assessment’   • Identify the goals and main types of needs assessments • Explain how needs assessments are conducted using one of the four major needs assessment models • Identify the key components of advance planning and organizing for a community needs assessment

What is a needs assessment? • “A needs assessment is a systematic investigation of an audience (s) to identify aspects of individual knowledge, skill, interest, attitude and/or abilities relevant to a particular issue, organizational goal, or objective.” (NOAA, 2008) • “The systematic collection of information to help identify the health problems in a target population, the antecedents to these problems, and programming needs and ideas.   8. Goals and Main Types of Needs Assessments Needs assessment creates a process to guide program development, implementation, & evaluation Also, see Figure 1.1 in text for another representation of this process

  16. Unit 2 Project • Project: Identify five potential sources of quality of life information for your community. What types of social indicators or other information for a social assessment can each provide? Describe the five sources in detail and how the community may perceive these sources as contributing to “quality of life.” • Use the resources in the Web Resources section to give you suggestions on performing a community capacity assessment. Write one to two paragraphs describing what a community capacity assessment is and why it is important to program planning. Based on the web resources, discuss strategies and methods for planning and conducting a community capacity assessment.
