  3. What happened? • Used different tones for different people in order to: • create different effects • communicate different things • represent himself differently

  4. Paint a picture What words would you use to describe him when he was speaking to: • Broseph? • Girlfriend? • Boss? • Mom?

  5. How did he do it? • Used a different tone/pitch of voice • Clearly enunciated or slurred speech • Used specific vocabulary and word choice

  6. In other words, he changed his... Tone -- the speaker’s attitude toward a subject, character, or audience. It is conveyed primarily through the author’s choice of words, imagery, and figurative language.

  7. However... Tone doesn’t necessarily change the information being communicated, just the way it’s perceived. • Imagine how the Boss would react if the guy used his “Broseph” tone to explain why he was out sick. • Or how Broseph would react to being spoken to like the guy’s girlfriend.

  9. Tone in literature • Connotation of words is crucial. • Different words can have the same definition, but different associations. • Connotation can be positive, negative, or neutral
