  1. Jean Paul Sartre Life of an intellectual committed to freedom

  2. Sartre maintained that the concepts of authenticity and individuality have to be earned but not learned. We need to experience death consciousness so as to wake up ourselves as to what is really important; the authentic in our lives which is life experience, not knowledge

  3. "he lived his words, spoke his own actions and his story and the story of the world ran parallel." "not only an intellectual but also the most complete human being of our age"

  4. I would like people to remember Nausea, my plays No Exit and The Devil and the Good Lord, and then my two philosophical works, more particularly the second one, Critique of Dialectical Reason. Then my essay on Genet, Saint Genet.... If these are remembered, that would be quite an achievement, and I don't ask for more. As a man, if a certain Jean-Paul Sartre is remembered, I would like people to remember the milieu or historical situation in which I lived,... how I lived in it, in terms of all the aspirations which I tried to gather up within myself.

  5. As for the conclusion, he says we developed by the decisions we make through out our lives. man must find out what he wants and find a way to pursuit such a goal. Jordan Also i found an excerpt from the essay that reminds me of No Exit. “We attempt to hide from ouselves that their nature and their weight depend each moment on the meaning which I give to them; we take them for constants. This amounts to considering the meaning which I gave to them just now or yesterday-which is irreme diable because it is past” I feel this directly relates to the character Garcin because he is a coward that that dwells on his past looking to show that he is in fact brave I like Sartre’s thinking the best. I think it’s important to see a philosopher that thinks our everyday decisions are important and that we are free. Yet, on the same token, he says that this freedom limits us. I was a little confused by this. Wouldn’t having more choices be true freedom? I guess there is a blurry line there. I also liked the idea of our conciousness being apart from ourselves in the way of we hope to achieve things based on our conciousness. Also a little confusing, but it does makes the most sense in today’s society. Most people have the freedom to make many choices, yet are we really free? He also believes humans are “condemned to be free.” I thought it was interesting that he developed the idea of each person having their own “project” or choice of self. Sartre also believed that success is not important to freedom. Freedom isn’t about fulfilling a wish, its about determining to wish in the first place. Basically, he feels that humans are totally free and with this freedom comes total responsibility. In the conclusion, Sartre states that each man will have to pursue their own freedom and discover their own value. Samantha
