  1. Specialized Techniques Week 5: April 25th Health & Medical Needs

  2. Updates • Ability Awareness Lesson Due Today, April 25th • OT/PT Observation Due May 16th • AT/AAC Observation Due May 23rd • Annotated Bibliography Due June 6th • Think about a topic where you are planning to find at least 6 research articles to summarize

Seizure Management & Other Health Management Planning • Hold a meeting with parents, nurse (or other medical professionals), teachers/staff that will be working with student. • Create a plan that is available to all of the people that work with the student • Should include: what may see, what to do, medications, allergies, emergency contacts, physician, • documentation sheet to write the occurrence, time, how long, etc.

Considerations for Management of Physical Needs • Orthopedic Conditions • Muscular Conditions • Neurological Conditions • Low Muscle Tone • Positioning for function • Inclusion in classroom activities • Medical considerations • e.g., positioning/handling/feeding • Basic idea….never assume you know, ask questions of specialists, parents, etc.

Health/Medical Protocols • Nurse collaborates with family & doctors to draft a classroom healthy & safety plan • Should state what to look for • What to do in the case of: • Seizures • Specific medical conditions • Note specific allergies • Note Medications • Emergency Contacts • Nurse, Parent, and school team should review this together

In-Class Activity • Please break into 4 groups • Work with your group for 5-10 minutes to answer the questions pertaining to your section and plan to share with the rest of the class. • Group 1: Universal Precautions, Incontinence & Toileting • Group 2: Postural Drainage, Passive Range of Motion, & Medication • Group 3:Nutrition & Feeding • Group 4: Tracheostomy, Colostomy, & Catherization
