Friends of Mayer Introduction • Parent organization committed to furthering the mission of Mayer Magnet School by: • Providing in school support • Spearheading fund raising • Organizing special events • The time we spend, and the money we raise, goes directly to benefit the students at our school. • We gave the school $200,000 this past summer 5

Friends of Mayer Board • The FOM Board is comprised of 20 Board Members (18 parents & 2 Faculty) elected to one year terms each Spring. • All Board Members have assigned roles in the areas of Fundraising & Outreach. • Many school-wide initiatives have developed based on the interests & efforts of the FOM Board. 6

How to Get Involved • Friends of Mayer thrives on the efforts of its volunteers. • We are eagerly looking for parents who are passionate about: • Fundraising • Coordinating events and programs • Giving a little time here & there to assist with events and opportunities within the school • You can volunteer as much or as little as your schedule allows. 7

Two Major Fundraising Initiatives • Pledge Drive • Taking place now – October 21, 2011 • Drive to raise money from parents • Money raised provides our school with additional discretionary dollars to fund staff & resources • Wellness-in-Motion Walkathon • Friday, May 4, 2012 • Fun day for students and parents as kids walk laps around Trebes Park while raising money for their school. 10

  11. Additional Fundraisers • Barnes & Noble Book Fair • Sunday, November 13, 2011 • Barnes & Noble at Webster & Clybourn • Halloween Costume Sale • New & used costumes available • Sales beginning end of September through Halloween • Held before and after school 11

  16. TWO COMPOSTERS PURCHASED WITH OUR ZERO WASTE GRANT FUNDS

  17. SOME OF OUR 6TH GRADE COMPOSTING TEAM: IT WAS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO MONITOR THE COMPOST. THEY ADDED EITHER DRY OR WET MATTER TO THE COMPOSTERS TO MAKE SURE THE FOOD WASTE WAS “COOKING” CORRECTLY.

  18. MAIN GARDEN ON CLIFTON AVENUE: THIS GARDEN CONSISTS OF 16 CLASSROOM PLOTS AND IS PLANTED WITH VEGETABLES AND HERBS. MOST PLANTS WERE STARTED BY SEED IN THE CLASSROOMS.

  19. MONTESSORI GARDEN: THIS GARDEN IS LOCATED ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING AND WAS PLANTED BY OUR MONTESSORI STUDENTS (AGES 3 YEARS TO 7 YEARS OLD).

  20. OUR NATIVE ILLINOIS GARDEN: THE TWO CONTAINERS FLANKING THE FRONT ENTRANCE TO OUR SCHOOL CONTAIN PLANTS NATIVE TO OUR STATE AND WAS CONCEIVED AND PLANTED BY OUR 2008 EIGHTH GRADE CLASS IN A PARTNERSHIP WITH STUDENTS AT DEPAUL UNIVERSITY STUDYING BIODIVERSTIY.
