Story Created and Directed by Francois Truffaut • Actor in “Close Encounters” • Made in 1959 • Antoine Donel portrayed by Jean-Pierre Leaud • Also starred in “Elizabeth” in 1998 • Scene where the kids pull posters off the wall taken from an Ingmar Bergman film. • 400 Blows means “to raise hell” • Was dedicated to film theorist Andre Bazin • Truffaut seen in a cameo riding next to Antoine in the Centrifuge

Lines were dubbed over again by the actors. • French New Wave style of directed was very much like guerilla filmmaking – Quick, improv., sound edited on spot, & very hectic. • Shot on streets of Paris • Was semi-autobiographical • Film about the injustices of the treatment of juvenile offenders in France at the time. • Award: • Best director 1959 Cannes Film Festival • Critics Award at 1959 New York Film Critics Circle. • Best European Film at 1960’s Bodil Awards • Nominated for original screenplay at 32nd Oscars.

Other elements of French New Wave • Lack of constructed frames • Amazing editing • Raw Emotion • Real setting • Jarring Cuts • Long Takes • Sought to convey human thought and feeling • Dialogue heavy • Elements force audience to accept scene as it is not as they want it to be • Film is unsentimental but a poetic account of a teenage delinquent

Story is told from Donel’s point of view • This is the first in a trilogy about the character of Donel • Truffaut’s debut film • Truffaut worked as film critic for influential French cinema magazine ‘Cahier Du Cinema.’ • Exteriors shot in his childhood streets along the Rue Des Martyrs and in the Rue Navarin in Paris • Cramped interiors also reflect Truffaut’s own past experiences.

Truffaut’s mother was a secretary for a magazine and didn’t pay much attention to him. • Truffaut was sent to a centre for delinquents • After going AWOL in the army he was taken in be Andre Bazin, the film critic, who would be become a spiritual father figure. • Film is about freedom as it relates to restriction and how this doesn’t allow us to achieve our goals because outside forces compel us along a path we do not wish to take • Film is visually restricted such as in the cramped apartment, how Antoine is in the way of his parents, how the Eiffel tower seems inaccessible in the first scene, and how he lives in a cramped space under the stairs.

Truffaut set up the restriction and had to give the character freedom at the end. • At the end of the film the character runs to open beach with lots of space. • Freeze frames the last shot with character looking at audience asking, “Where does he go to from here?” • Doesn’t appeal to audiences emotions and just tells the story matter of factly. • No cutting between shots and only uses single shots of a scene. • Uses lap dissolves – one image dissolves with the other as it changes.
