Getting into Dental School

Navigating the journey to dental school can be complex, but understanding key requirements can help. Dental schools typically evaluate candidates based on GPA, DAT scores, required courses, and extracurricular activities. A minimum of 90 semester hours is needed, including essential science courses (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics) and non-science courses (English, Mathematics). Competitive DAT scores average around 19. Start preparing early and gather relevant experience through shadowing and research. Utilize resources like UCF’s Pre-Health Professions Advisement and AADSAS for application support.

  3. Required Courses • 90 Semester Hours (B.A. or B.S. degree is not required) • Science Courses: • Biological Sciences with Laboratory – 8-12 Sem. Hrs. Should include Zoology or Animal Biology (minimum 2 semesters), Genetics, Microbiology • Chemistry with Laboratory – 16-24 Sem. Hrs. [General and Organic] • Physics with Laboratory – 8 Sem. Hrs. • Non-Science: • English/Communication Skills - 6 Sem. Hrs. [1 year]Mathematics- 6-8 Sem. Hrs. • Anatomy, Biochemistry, Embryology, Histology, Microbiology, and Physiology are highly recommended

  4. DAT • Biology • General Chemistry • Organic Chemistry • Reading Comprehension • Quantitative Reasoning • Perceptual Ability • Scoring: • 0-30 • Average is ~15 • 19 or above is very competitive • Some schools (UF) requires at least 15 in each section

  5. DAT • What classes should I take before attempting the DAT? AS MANY AS YOU CAN! • Some subsections: embryology, genetics, molecular biology, immunology, endocrinology, neuroscience, cellular respiration, nutrition, ecology, classification, stoichiometry, electronic structure, bonding, phases/phase changes, colligative properties, acids and bases, equilibrium, kinetics, nuclear reactions, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, nomenclature, molecular structure, synthesis reactions, oxygen and nitrogen compounds, biochemistry, algebra, geometry, word problems, trigonometry, and many more…………

  6. How do I apply? • UCF’s Pre-Health Professions Advisement office • http://www.bmsc.ucf.edu/ph/index.htm • Pre-Application Materials Packet (available for download 2/15/05) • AADSAS • Applies to 54 schools nationwide • http://aadsas.adea.org/ • Available mid-May 2005 (for 2006 entering class)
