RPS.LAM Kandy

1. Nestled in the foothills of the Hill country on the banks of a lovely tree-lined lake, the city of Kandy is the center of traditional Sri Lankan culture. The sacred tooth of Buddha, symbolic of Kandy’s sovereignty since 1590, is preserved in its own temple, The Dalada Maligawa. This is part of a vast complex of buildings including the King’s Palace and the Royal Audience Hall. A densely foliated residential district covers the hills on the south side of the lake, while the main town occupies the streets to the west and north. On opposite banks of the lake stand 2 colonial style hotels, The Queen’s Hotel and, our hotel, The Hotel Suisse. RPS.LAM Kandy Another remnant of British colonial times is Cargill’s Department Store which stands in the city’s more traditional Sri Lankan shopping area. Thronging with people, the “Street Life” is wonderful. The Municipal Market is only a couple of blocks west of the Lake’s Jetty. Nearby, the huge Bus Depot brings hundreds of people into the city from the surrounding villages to the market. Also worth visiting are The Peradeniya Gardens, a vast botanical park. I was born in Katagastota,a village just outside Kandy, on the banks of Sri Lanka’s largest river, The Mahaweli. We hope you enjoy our photographic tour.
