  22. The variable that is changed by the person doing the experiment

  23. Dependent Variable

  24. A variable that changes due the effects of the independent variable being changed

  25. Scientific Law

  26. Any fact that has been proven beyond any doubt

  27. Scientific Theory

  28. An idea that is supported by much scientific data and is accepted by the scientific community as correct, but cannot be proven

  29. Problem Solving

  30. What do you have? • Identify what’s given • List the variables

  31. What do you want? • Identify what’s being asked for • Identify the problem

  32. How do you get it? • Identify a formula or an algorithm that can be used to solve the problem

  39. Element • Any pure substance that contains only one kind of atom

  40. Compound • A pure substance made up of 2 or more elements chemically combined

  41. Mixture • A Physical blend of substances

  42. Mixture • Each part retains its properties

  43. Mixture • Mixtures can be separated by physical means

  44. Mixtures • Heterogeneous • Homogenous

  45. Heterogeneous Mixture • Made up of multiple phases • Non-uniform

  46. Phase • Any physically separate part of a substance

  47. Interface • Where two phases come together

  48. Homogeneous Mixture • Made up of only one phase • Uniform throughout

  49. Solution • Homogeneous mixture

  50. Solute • Any of the lesser portions of a solution • What has been dissolved
