Packetization Scheme for 12-bit Unlinear DV Audio over RTP Draft Overview

This draft outlines a packetization scheme for streaming 12-bit unlinear DV audio over RTP packets, compatible with L16 PCM format. It describes the differentiation from the L16 document and conversion between 12-bit and 16-bit audio, highlighting the recommended unbundling of video and audio in the RTP/DV stream. The document addresses the practicality and increase in data size when converting between 12-bit and 16-bit audio streams. For detailed specifications and encoding examples, please refer to the draft.

  2. Overview of draft • Packetization scheme for 12 bits unlinear DV audio over RTP • The draft specifies the differenciated part with the L16 document

  3. Audio in DV format • PCM 16 bit linear • compatible to L16 • PCM 12 bit unlinear (this draft) • PCM 20 bit linear (unused yet)

  4. Why 12 bit unlinear ? • 12 bit audio is used in DV video format • DV video has 12 bit audio option • Unbundled video and audio is RECOMMENDED in RTP/DV • How to send 12 bit unlinear encoded DV audio stream ? • It is not difficult to convert 12 bit to 16 bit • But, data size increses 33 %

  5. Sample for converting 16 -> 12 Please see draft for details 16 bits linear (X) 12 bits nonlinear (Y) ------------------------------------------------------------ 32,767 (7FFFh) Y = INT(X/64) + (600h) 2,047 (7FFh) 16,384 (4000h) 1,792 (700h) ------------------------------------------------------------ 16,383 (3FFFh) Y = INT(X/32) + (500h) 1,791 (6FFh) 8,192 (2000h) 1,536 (600h) ------------------------------------------------------------ 8,191 (1FFFh) Y = INT(X/16) + (400h) 1,535 (5FFh) 4,096 (1000h) 1,280 (500h)
