  2. Goals • Increase recognition of high risk situations. • Improve your decision-making skills. • Help you create a support network in your community. • Instill a higher sense of responsibility in us.

  3. Welcome • Welcome and thank you for participating in this life-saving project. • The purpose of this training is to learn and teach each other more about the consequences of drinking and driving, and how to keep our loved ones safe on the roads and highways.

  4. Madrinas and Padrinos • At the end of this module you will all graduate as Madrinas and Padrinos of Traffic Safety (Drinking and Driving).

  5. Madrina-Padrino • The Madrina-Padrino concept is very clear. • As Madrinas or Padrinos (Godparents) we promise to take responsibility for our Godchild in every way in the event that the child’s parents are no longer in their lives. • Madrinas and Padrinos of Traffic Safety promise to take responsibility for the safety of their loved ones (regarding traffic safety) when there is lack of TS knowledge.

  6. Defining The Impaired Driving Problem • Who are these impaired drivers? • Are they people with alcohol or drug dependencies only? • Who do they affect? • Do they pay for all the damages they cause in the event of a crash? • Can we stop them?

  7. Impaired Driving Problem • Do you know anybody that was injured or killed in an alcohol-related crash? • Why do people choose to drink and drive?

  8. Facts • Everybody is at risk when there is a drunk driver on the road.

  9. Laws • The legal limit for intoxication by • alcohol is .08 or higher in the state of Texas. • A driver or passenger can be fined if caught w/open container in a vehicle. • Punishment for DWI depends on how many times you’ve been convicted. • DWI with a child passenger (under 15), you can be charged with child endangerment.

A 22-year-old man had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when he crashed his speeding car into a San Antonio Police Department cruiser, killing himself and an officer, the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said Monday. • Preliminary toxicology tests reveal that Ismael Herrera had a blood-alcohol level of .189 or more than twice the limit in Texas of .08. • Police said that Herrera was driving in excess of 90 mph early Friday morning when his 1994 Chevrolet Caprice rear-ended the parked cruiser that Officer John Wheeler was driving. • Wheeler was parked on the shoulder of the southbound lanes of Loop 410 near Culebra Road looking for drunken drivers. • Both vehicles burst into flames, killing both men at the scene.   16. Solution • Making a Promise • Set a personal goal on how to prevent Drinking and Driving • Go out in your community and partner with someone to check on each other, and let them know they can count on you anytime for a designated driver.

  17. Solution • Spread the word about the Dangers of Drinking and Driving • Now you will sign your Promise and Action Plan which will encourage you to talk to friends and family about the Dangers of Drinking and Driving.
