  1. The God of the Bible The Creator as Revealed in His BookQuotations from the English Standard Version

  2. The God of the Bible • A reasoned case for belief • The attributes of God • The character of God • God’s relationship with us

  3. Big questions (matter matters!) • The scientific method • A mathematical, physical world • Evolution of life • But where did it all come from?

  4. Where did it all come from? • Steady State • No beginning, no end, no God • The Big Bang • An almighty explosion • “the big bang was not the abrupt switching on of time at some singular first moment, but the emergence of time from space in an ultra rapid but nevertheless continuous manner”

  5. Where did it all come from? • The only reasonable answer is that the universe has a creator • An Almighty explosion! • “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”

  6. Is it reasonable to believe in God? • The only reason for existence is that the universe has a creator • But what’s the point of existence? • God must have a purpose

  7. God’s purpose revealed • The only reason for creation is that the creator has a purpose • But what’s the point of knowing this? • God must want us to understand • “Let there be light”

  8. A communicative God • The only reason for our ability to understand is that the creator wants to communicate with us • God is a communicator • It is reasonable to expect to have his message • It must be a message that is consistent with our world

  9. The message of the Bible • A consistent message from a communicative creator • Creation • A broken world • A route to healing • A bright future • Freewill • A message that hinges on faith

  10. The case for belief in the God of the Bible • Reasoned explanation for existence • Creative God • Communicative God • The Bible • God’s message to creation • Gives meaning to existence

  11. Creative & Communicative Eternal Unchanging Everywhere Invisible Uniquely supreme Unsearchable Attributes of God Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.”’ God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.” (Ex 3:13-15 ESV) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. (Ro 1:18-20 ESV) The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. … Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ (Ac 17:24-28 ESV) Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. (De 6:4 ESV) For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): “I am the LORD, and there is no other.” (Isa 45:18 ESV) “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” (Mal 3:6 ESV) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (Jas 1:17 ESV) When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all. (1Co 15:28 ESV) … one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph 4:5-6 ESV) Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”(Ex 33:18-20 ESV) O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. (Ps 139:1-4 ESV) Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Ro 11:33-36 ESV) He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.(Col 1:15 ESV) Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.(Ps 145:3 ESV)

  12. His Attributes Qualities which are beyond us His Character Qualities we can aspire to Attributes & Character - What’s the Difference?

  13. Merciful Gracious Patient Loving Faithful Just Fair “The LORD,… a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness … forgiving iniquity, … not the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children…” The Character of God (Ex 34v5-7) But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ––by grace you have been saved–– and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.(Eph 2:4-9 ESV) How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me. (Ps 13:1-6 ESV) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Ge 2:16-17 ESV) But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.(2Pe 3:8-10 ESV) Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” (Heb 13:5-6 ESV) “… I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.” (De 5:9-10 ESV) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.(Ro 6:23 ESV)

  14. In God’s Image?

  15. In God’s Image? • Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. …” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.(Ge 1:26-27 ESV) • God works (with us) through his angels • There is something of God and the angels in each of us • The (potential for) the divine in human character (and the human frame?)

  16. The Angel of the LORD • And the LORD appeared to [Abraham] by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. (Ge 18:1-2 ESV) • And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place. The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, … (Ge 18:33-19:1 ESV) • The angel of the LORD was among the three “men”.

  17. The Role of Angels • And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?(Heb 1:13-14 ESV)
