What is HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis? • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is an emergency medical response given to prevent transmission of blood-borne pathogens following a potential exposure. • HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (HIV PEP) is a set of services that are provided to prevent HIV infection following potential exposure. • Services include first aid, counselling, HIV exposure risk assessment, HIV testing (with informed consent), a course of anti-HIV medication, with appropriate support and follow up.

  3. What is HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis? • Should be initiated as soon as possible after exposure, ideally within 2 hours or less, and no later than 72 hours post- exposure. • Adherence to a full 28-day course of anti-retroviral (ARV) medicines is critical to successful treatment.

  4. Why the UN Provides HIV PEP Starter Kits. • In an ideal world, HIV PEP treatment would be available from any emergency medical service anywhere in the world . • This is true already in many places, but not yet in all. • Therefore, the UN provides HIV PEP to field offices • To be a responsible employer; • And because personnel can be at risk while working for the UN, especially in locations where HIV PEP is not available from local medical services.

  5. UN PEP Starter Kit. • An emergency PEP treatment that provides HIV treatment for only 5 days. • Only to provide emergency treatment while a referral to a medical facility/trained service provider is organised. • Only a trained service provider can prescribe a full-course treatment of 28 days based on a full eligibility and risk assessment.

  6. Contents of UN PEP Starter Kit. • Each UN PEP Starter Kit contains: • HIV Post‐Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in the United Nations: Guidance for the Use of PEP starter kits (August 2009)(booklet). • Anti-HIV medication and how it should be taken • The pregnancy test and when it should be used. • Emergency Oral Contraception

  7. Contents of UN PEP Starter Kit • The HIV Post‐Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in the United Nations: Guidance for the Use of PEP starter kits (August 2009) booklet contains: • General Information on PEP Starter Kits, Eligibility for PEP, distribution and storage, and information to include in the country PEP protocol. • PEP Information Leaflet for Patients • PEP Information Leaflet for Custodians. • PEP Information Leaflet for Physicians.

  8. Contents of UN PEP Starter Kit • A five day anti-retroviral HIV medication supplied as a combination tablet, in this instance ZIDOLAM. • Pregnancy test: to identify if the exposed women of childbearing age was already pregnant before potential exposure to the virus. • Emergency oral contraception ("morning-after" pill); 2 tablets of Levonorgestrel to prevent unwanted pregnancy after sexual assault.
