  1. Daphnia Heart Rate Lab

  2. Rise-Up How do you measure heart-rate? Measure your heart rate with a partner, and record the results.

  3. Take out your notebook, you will be recording your background lab background information and data here. If you have questions, write them down and save them for the end of this talk.

  4. Daphnia Today we will be using an animal called Daphnia to measure heart-rates. Daphnia are used all over the world in by scientists for testing. Practice with S counting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFAmFuH4A0k

  5. Materials: A couple drops of your TEST solution, (water, NyQuil or Coffee) Microscope Slide Daphnia A little tiny bit of cotton, so the Daphnia can’t swim around

  6. Data Collection You need to test water, coffee and Nyquil on your Daphnia. A control is a test you do to see what the heart rate is normally. The control substance is ____________.

  7. Data Collection Data should include your PROCEDURES (like, what did you DO?!): Heart Rates for the Daphnia in each test solution Type of test solution Amount of test solution (how many drops?) Anything else you think should be included. Remember, less is more! You never know what information will be helpful later!

  8. Hypotheses You will make 2 hypotheses, one for the Nyquil and one for the Coffee. If the daphnia is in coffee, then the heart-rate will ____________. If the daphnia is in Nyquil, then the heart-rate will ____________.

  9. We are using a live animal. Its is legal to test on animals for science if every effort is made to reduce animal suffering. Write 2 ways you will reduce the suffering of the Daphnia in your study.
