  3. A brief summary of chapter 5 • Blasphemous indulgence (1-4) • Disturbing writing on the wall (5-12) • Judgment pronounced (13-29) • “numbered, numbered” • “weighed” • “divided” • Judgment executed (30)

  4. Questions: • Why did Nebuchadnezzar receive mercy and Belshazzar judgment? • Why was Daniel’s so “cold”! • How is Belshazzar related to the beasts and horns in the visions in chapters 7 and 8? • Why was Daniel so disturbed when he received the visions (7:15; 8:27)?

  5. 50 years and a few kings after chapter 4 • Remember the chronology of the book? • 1234-785-96-101112 • Chapter 5 took place in the last year of Belshazzar’s coregncy (5:16, 29) • This fateful event occurred 12 years after the visions of Chapters 7 and 8 in the first 3 years of Belshazzar’s reign, 67 years after vision in Chp 2! • Belshazzar foreshadows future evils

GUILTY AS CHARGED: • False sense of security (1) • “Impregnable wall of Babylon” • 91 m high, 24 m wide, 10.7 m deep, 97 km in circumference, 100 fortified gates, large moat • 20 years of food supply • Unrestricted use of Euphrates • Blasphemous indulgence (1-4, 23) • Cf. 5400 gold and silver temple articles returned with Ezra(Ezr 1:9-11)

LOOKING BEYOND… • Belshazzar and Nebuchadnezzar represent 2 destinies for humanity • The “humbled” humanity • The “rebellious” humanity • Belshazzar typifies the spiritual reality of the evil behind the arrogant, rebellious and hostile humanity and the intensification of evil near the last days! • The troubling vision of the “little horn”!!

  13. Terrible “Little Horn” Reappears (11) • “from King of the North… rising to power” (21-45) • Contemptible (21), deceitful (23), desecrate temple and abolish sacrifices (31), flattery…corrupt (32) • Indulgent, boastful, blasphemous, “supernatural”, power-hunger, new religion… (36-39)

Very Disturbing visions… • “…was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale” (7:28, 15) • “…was in a deep sleep” (8:18) • “…was exhausted and lay ill for several days. … was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding” (8:27, 17) • “…had no strength, deadly pale and I was helpless…deep sleep” (10:7-9) • “…overcome with anguish…strength is gone, can hardly breathe” (10:16-17)

Repeated historical fulfillments (8:13; 9:27; 11:31; 12:11) • Visions have contemporary, future end time relevance (8:17, 19, 26; 10:14; 12:6) • Visions have individual, political, cultural and spiritual dimensions • The “humbled humanity” reflects God’s goodness • The “rebellious humanity” reflects Satan’s reality & conflict (10:12-13, 21)
