Environmental Defense Canada:Dirty Dozen Exposed • Canadian mining smelters released more than 2.3 million pounds of heavy metals in 1998, including arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel compounds. • "These poisons cause cancer, affect the nervous system, and are particularly dangerous to children."

  4. The Canadian Environmental Defense Fund (CEDF) is announcing: • Mining companies and individual facilities released toxic substances into air and water. • 1. Ontario spends $50 million over 5 years to clean Great Lakes • Last Updated Thu, 11 Apr 2002 18:14:38 • TORONTO – Some political critics and environmentalists said that the Ontario government’s plan to clean up 16 toxic area around the Great Lakes doesn’t hold water. • Ontario Environment Minister Elizabeth Witmer announced Thursday it will spend $50 million to clean up the Great Lakes. The world’s largest fresh water source is also bordered by one of the world’s largest industrial regions. • Witmer said the funding is significant. The money is earmarked for : - cleaning up contaminated sediment, - reducing pollutants, - Increasing the monitoring and reporting of water quality. Chlorinated Water and Health Effects • Trihalomethanes (THMs) are only one subgroup of the many disinfection by-products formed during chlorination. • By 1998, new epidemiologic studies had been published which reported associations between THMs and cancer (e.g., bladder, colon) and adverse pregnancy outcomes (e.g, miscarriage, birth defects, low birth weight).

  11. 2nd stage - Oxidative filtration KDF Process Media are high-purity, granulated copper and zinc-based alloys that treat water through a process based upon the principle of redox (Oxidation-Reduction). Originally, KDF was shorthand for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion.

  12. A bed of KDF manufactured from zinc and copper. The copper becomes the cathode and zinc becomes the anode within each granule of the KDF. A high voltage medium is thus established, creating hostile conditions for algal, fungal and bacterial growth.

  13. KDF Fluid Treatment removes chlorine dissolved in water. KDF Fluid Treatment’s unique combination of copper and zinc creates an electro-chemical reaction. During this reaction,electrons are transferred between molecules, and new elements are created. Some harmful contaminants are changed into harmless components. Free chlorine, for instance, is changed into benign, water-soluble chloride, which is then carried harmlessly through the water supply.
