  13. Assessment • More or less professional judgement? Mechanisms for increasing or decreasing the amount of internal assessment

  14. Internal Centre Devised Assessment • The assessment activities will be designed by the centre. These may be based on scenario settings, or may be further practical work, or presentations given to identified audiences to illustrate knowledge and understanding of particular specification topics. • In GCSE Additional Science, the optional internal assessment criteria will allow for centre devised activities in a choice of contexts, this may be an applied science identified approach.

  16. GCSE Additional Science offers a choice of assessment pathways • Student A 40% Internal Assessment 30% + 30% External Assessment Internal assessment to happen as part of the learning process: • 45 minutes • On going testing of practical skills External assessment: • 3 multiple choice tests, can be taken together = 1 hour • Structured paper = 1 ½ hours

  33. BTEC First Certificate & Diploma in Applied Science

  34. Key features of BTEC • Work-related qualifications • Alternative practical based learning style • First Certificate equal to 180 guided learning hours • First Diploma equal to 360 guided learning hours • First Certificate nests within First Diploma • Recognised within Achievement and Performance Tables • 100% internally assessed

  35. Key Features of BTEC • Encourages personal and vocational skills • Uses the best assessment to suit local needs • Successor to GNVQ and GCSE Applied Courses • Requires programme approval prior to start

  36. BTEC First in Applied Science • New specialist work-related qualification • BTEC First Certificate attracts up to around twice the number of achievement and performance points as a GCSE • BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to up to around four times the number of achievement and performance points as a GCSE • Allows progression to GCE in Applied Science, BTEC and other post-16 science and science-related programmes

  37. Achievement and Performance Points

  38. BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science • Work related/based learning that mirrors working in the science industry (or organisation), as one of the following: • technician • technologist • scientist • assistant practitioner • editor. • Can relate to local/regional industry - involvement of industry e.g. fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, horticulture, polymers, food manufacturing, medical science in hospitals, forensic science.

  39. Unit Titles Unit 1: Chemistry Applications Unit 2: Physical Science Applications Unit 3: Biological Systems

  40. Unit Structure • Unit abstract • Learning outcomes • Unit content • Grading Grid • Essential guidance for tutors

  41. Grading Grid • Sets out the learning outcomes in the context of each unit the evidence required for the student to achieve a pass, merit or distinction award. • For example: Pass – investigate and describe ionic, covalent and metallic bonds. Merit – investigate and explain the difference in properties of substances with ionic, covalent and metallic bonded substances. Distinction – explain bonding in terms of stability – a means of achieving an empty outer shell either by donating, accepting or sharing electrons.

  42. BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science(2006 proposed ) — 2 core + 4 options • Unit 1- CORE: Scientific Principles • Unit 2- CORE : Science and the World of Work • Unit 3: Chemistry Applications • Unit 4: Physical Science Applications ----- Accredited Prior Learning (APL) • Unit 5: Biological Systems • Unit 6: Working with Science • Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology • Unit 8: Environmental Science • Unit 9: Plants and Food • Unit 10: Forensic Science Applications • Unit 11: Science in Medicine
