  2. What is Schizophrenia? • Schizophrenia is a chronic condition that requires lifelong treatment • It’s a group of severe brain disorders that make people interpret reality abnormally • It is not a split personality disease, it refers to the disruption of the usual balance of emotions and thinking

  3. 5 types of schizophrenia • Paranoid- delusions and hallucinations • Catatonic- don’t interact with others • Disorganized- disorganized thoughts and inappropriate expressions of emotion • Undifferentiated- people who have symptoms from more then one subtype • Residual- people who have extended periods without any positive symptoms

  4. Causes and Prevention • Researchers don’t know what exactly causes this disease • They believe it’s a combination of genetics and the environment • Studies show there’s a difference in brain structure in people with this disease • There’s no sure way to prevent schizophrenia but early treatment can get symptoms under control • People at risk should avoid drug use, reduce stress, and start antipsychotic medications as soon as necessary

  5. What increases your risk? • Having family history of schizophrenia • Stressful life circumstances • Older paternal age • Exposure to viruses, toxins, or malnutrition in the womb

  6. Signs and Symptoms • Delusions • Hallucinations • Thought Disorder • Disorganized Behavior • Loss of Interest • Social Withdrawal • Memory Problems • Mood Swings • Depression

  7. Prognosis There will be symptoms of schizophrenia throughout their lifetime but they can get treatment to help lessen their symptoms. Many people with this disorder are able to live a pretty normal life if they get the help they need and with more research and medication improvements the outlook is even better.

  8. Diagnosis When a doctor thinks someone might have schizophrenia they usually ask for medical and psychiatric histories, do a physical exam, and run medical and psychological tests. Some of these tests are laboratory tests, a psychological evaluation, or a SPECT scan

  9. Treatment Options • This disease requires lifelong treatment • Antipsychotic medications to help control symptoms • Psychosocial therapy • Hospitalization may be necessary during crisis periods

  10. Complications If schizophrenia is left untreated some complications could be: • Suicide • Self injury • Depression • Alcohol/drug abuse • Homelessness • Family conflicts

  11. Myths about schizophrenia • Everyone has the same symptoms • It’s a character flaw • People are dangerous and out of control • It develops quickly • Its purely genetic • Its untreatable • All sufferers need to be hospitalized • People with this disorder cant lead productive lives • Antipsychotic medications are worse then the illness itself
