Summary • In patients with CHC and Child Class A cirrhosis the achievement of SVR status: • significantly reduced liver-related mortality, • significantly reduced the risk of HCC development. • Sex (male) and an older age at the start of treatment (over 58 years) were independently associated with the risk of HCC development. Conclusions • The results of the study suggest that a largerproportion of patients willhave a favorable outcome if treated with Peg-IFN plus Ribavirin because of the higher SVR rates. • Thus, all patients with Child Class A cirrhosis who are suitable for treatment shouldbe given this combination therapy. • Finally, in this population of pts, since the achievement of SVR did not completely eliminate the risk of HCC, ultrasonographicsurveillance should becontinued especially in older pts.
