Metaphase Prophase Works Cited Mitosis Definitions Telophase Anaphase
Prophase(prophase and Prometaphase) Back • Prophase • 1st step of Mitosis • Chromatin condenses into chromosomes • Two chromosomes are created, thanks to the genetic material created in the “S” step of the Cell Cycle • Prometaphase • Microtubules enter the nuclear space • Each chromosome forms 2 kinetochores at the centromere
Metaphase Back • Centromeres of opposing chromatids meet at the metaphase plate • In some types of cells chromosomes do not line up at the metaphase plate, rather they hover back and forth between poles randomly. • If a kinetochore becomes unattached from its microtubules, it will generate a signal, preventing a premature leap to anaphase (the mitotic spindle checkpoint)
Anaphase Back • The proteins holding together the sister chromatids are broken down, separating them. • The new chromosomes are then pulled apart by shortening kinetochores to their respective sides.
Telophase Back • Essentially a reversal of prophase/prometaphase. • The newly separated chromosomes fuse with opposite ends of the cell. • Using pieces of the parent cell’s membrane, a new nuclear membrane is created around the chromosomes • The newly created nuclei now unfold back into chromatin.
Definitions Home • Kinetochores – the protein structure on chromosomes where spindle fibers attach during division to pull chromosomes apart. • Metaphase Plate – an imaginary line on the chromatid that is equidistant from the two centrsome poles • Mitotic Spindle Checkpoint – the point at which a cell undergoing mitosis stops so that kinetochores may attach completely before continuing to anaphase.
