Berry Gordy • Born 1929 Detroit, MI • Family was middle class • Dropped out of high school to box • Drafted into the Army during the Korean War. • After returning from Korea he opened a record store but was unsuccessful and went to work for Lincoln-Mercury (Automobile). • After meeting singer Jackie Wilson, Gordy wrote a song called Reet Petite and then several more that became hits for Wilson.

Gordy • Took the profits from his songs and borrowed $800 from his family (credit union) and invested in his own record company, Tamla Records. • Teamed up with Smokey Robinson (of the Miracles). • Gordy used a few names for record labels…Tamla, Rayber, Motown and eventually merged it all into Motown.
