  2. My story A dream and how it was shuttered

  3. The college agreement When you chose to go to college you’re making an agreement with yourself .

  4. The college agreement As a student, you are here to work on yourself like my good friend is doing below , • You are to gain knowledge about yourself to help you grow and mature into responsible human beings • You are to gain knowledge about occupations and decide on what they want to do in future • You are here to be somebody

  5. Do you know why you are here & Are working towards why you came here or you are drifting away

  6. When you are in college, it is your responsibility to do what it is you came here for. You’re in college to learn, just focus on that and be well prepare for the real world.

  7. The one semester student • Poor time management • A student who does not attempt to manage time wisely puts themselves in a position to start of behind. • Starting work last minute can add stress to what may be a simple or already difficult assignment. The results may reflect negatively on ones grades • Holding off on studying can cause information not to store in the brain, studied items from the day before are for gotten because information is not stored in the brain Not allowing yourself to get the proper rest that’s needed can cause some one to move slower, this may result in to waking up late for class. Tardiness can have a negative effect on ones grade also can cause one to miss out on information.

  8. Rarely goes to class to learn • No progress will be gained if a student does not pay attention to the lesson that is being taught. • Talking to another class mate while the professor is speaking causes one to miss information • The purpose of the professor providing notes or putting up slides is for the student to copy them not ignore them. • When class starts it does not mean nap time begins, stay awake to learn.

  9. A Progressing Student Manages time wisely Knows their schedule, utilizes planners, allows time for proper rest, plans ahead for study Goes to Class Takes notes in class and asks questions when confused about material Gets to know classmates and forms beneficial relationships with the teacher as well as the students to form a good learning environment. Work as the main priority instead of an option meaning the student has their priorities in order from most important to succeed in school to least important.

  10. Avoiding Distractions Peer Pressure Just because you friends are doing something does not mean that you have to join. There will always be time to attend the next function. If your first thought is NO then stick with it. Electronics and Social Networks Cell phones are a major distraction when it comes to studies. you can always check missed calls and texts later. Get your work done first. Don’t be afraid to turn of the TV or Radio when its time to get in your books. Depending on your learning style if it is not necessary to have something on while studying cut it off. You can always catch a rerun or surf the internet for what you missed but, you cant always retake a failed test.

  11. Substance Abuse • Drinking alters judgment • Drinking alter character alcohol can make you become someone that you are not, causing you to get into situations you will later regret. More serious consequences of actions while intoxicated are arrests, underage drinking chargers, which can cause problems with certain majors. Even worse suspension or expulsion. Alcohol poisoning can also be a result of drinking too much.

  12. Academic Asistance • Tutoring is at you disposal and its free! • They offer help with class work if or when needed, also can help you gain a better understanding with subject material and for up coming test. • Teachers are here to help • They offer office hours when class is not in session, which are made for the students. You can use this time to check status in class, ask questions about areas that are difficult for you to understand.

  13. Academic Assistance cont’d • Learning services • If you have a learning disability learning services provides extra help to compensate your need. This can include a private area to study as well as testing in a separate area for a longer period of time and longer time with class assignments. • Note takers are also available if you have problems paying attention to the teacher and taking notes at the same time.

  14. Counseling services • This service is also free • Don’t let your stresses run your college life • The counselors are there to talk to you about your school work and classes, problems that are happening at home, money issues that may have you worried, boyfriend/girlfriend problems, friends and if you just need someone to talk too. • Confidentiality • You do not have to worry about anything that you speak to your counselor about.

  15. Seminars and Programs • Institutions provide seminars and programs such as • Stress management • Adjustment to college life • Time management • How to study • Organizational outbreak • Critical thinking workshop • Depression screenings

  16. Use your free time productively • Use your free time for reason that will be beneficial to your emotional and physical well being. • Join a organization of your interest, play intramural sports if your into athletic. Go to class study sessions, make the library your second home and best friend.

  17. Responsibilities • Prepare to take responsibility for you own actions. You have control over the decisions you make. • If your at the wrong place at the wrong time it falls on you. You decide to hang around trouble makers its on you. Falling behind in class its no one fault but your own. • Dorm behavior • Respect other, you are not the onlyone living in the dorm. Follow the rules.

  18. Goals • Set realistic long term and short term goals • Short term Ex: completing homework and test with good grades. • Find a field for the major that you want to study. Learn what career path you would like to take. • Long term example: graduating and planning for graduate school if that’s your next move.

  19. Conclusion • Don’t become the one left behind; you don’t want to watch your friends move on while you’re standing still. Pay attention in all classes, its no use to take a class if you do not leave with any gained knowledge. It’s not fun being a senior that still need help with small grammar and paper formation. College is a development institution site. It is to train and prepare you for a brighter future. Don’t let minor distractions take you off the path to reaching your goals. There will always be another party or trip, get what’s important out of the way before deciding to give school a break. When you combined all your strength to work on your weaknesses you will become more adapting to college and better prepared for life.
