  1. Phases of the Moon An Interactive Presentation By: Mrs. Sarita Shetenhelm Click this button to come back to this slide. Click these buttons to go onto the next slide. Part 2 Click this button if you have already started 

  2. A Thought… Have you ever looked up to the sky and wondered why the “Pie in the Sky” or the moon takes unusual shapes at different times of the month? If so you’ll find your answers here! If not, I’m sure you will learn something interesting 

  3. Quick Facts 1) Did you know that moon has to travel 382,400 km to get around the Earth? That is 237,612 miles! Wow!

  4. Just for fun… If the moon travels 237,612 miles a month, about how many times do you think that is to go from Washington D.C. to San Francisco, Ca.? Click on the answer you think is correct. a. 5 times b. 50 times c. 100 times d. 500 times

  5. Good Guess! Try another one 

  6. Yeah you Got It!!! It would take 97 times going between Washington D.C. and San Francisco to equal the same distance as the moon travels around the Earth each month. WOW!!!

  7. Quick Fact #2 • Did you know that moon rocks brought back to Earth by the Apollo missions date the moon to be about 4.5 billion years old? That is pretty old! But, it is still a few million years younger than the Earth.

  8. Quick Fact # 3 • We only see one side of the moon which we call the light side while the other that we do not see we call the “dark side.” While the moon revolves around the Earth it takes it about 29 ½ days to go through a full cycle.

  9. Ok so… • Now that we know some fun facts lets talk about these cycles that the moon goes through? • The Moon goes through different phases each month they include New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and Waning Crescent. Then the phases start over again.

  10. The word “waxing” means to grow so during these phases where waxing is found you can tell the moon is growing bigger. So if waxing means to grow---What do you think “waning” means? a. Shrink b. Expand c. Grow d. None of the above

  11. Oops Try Again!

  12. GREAT GUESS!!! Nice work! I think you are ready to learn so more 

  13. Before we go on… Check out this website. It has a short video and a little game that has to do with the phases of the moon. http://www.wonderville.ca/v1/activities/phases/phases.html

  14. Sun New Moon Now that you have seen that quick video. Let’s review, we start the phases out with a new moon. This is when the moon is blocking the sun so it looks like there is no moon. Moon Earth Pictures courtesy of NASA

  15. Waxing Crescent Sun • The next phase the moon revolves counter-clockwise just a little bit to make a waxing crescent. • It looks like a fingernail.

  16. So which is next? So it is time for a question for you! We have done New Moon and Waxing Crescent so what do you think comes next? a. Waning Crescent b. Full Moon c. Waxing Gibbous d. First Quarter

  17. Oops • Remember they go in this order New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and Waning Crescent. Try that one again!

  18. Yes! Nice work! Let’s see what the First Quarter is all about.

  19. First Quarter During the First Quarter phase you can see that the moon looks like it is cut in half. Sun

  20. Waxing Gibbous Sun Now you can see that the moon is just about full. In just a few more days you will see the whole moon light up!

  21. Cool Moon Facts Here are some quick and very cool moon facts for you! • Moon isn’t round it is actually shaped like an egg! • The moon shakes! Apollo astronauts took a seismograph (this measures earthquakes on Earth) and found that there were moonquakes. Pretty Awesome! For more fun facts check out this website: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/top_10_cool_moon_facts-10.html

  22. Full Moon This one is pretty self-explanatory. You can see the reflection of the sun in the moon which is why we see the whole face of the moon. Did you know that there are different names for each of the full moons? The Native Americans gave each moon a different name. Click here to find out more! Sun

  23. Stop! Let’s see what you have learned so far: What is the correct order of the phases that we have talked about so far? • waxing crescent, full moon, new moon, first quarter, waxing gibbous • new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon • new moon, waxing gibbous, first quarter, waxing crescent, full moon • full moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waning gibbous, new moon

  24. Oops Take another look… • Remember that the new moon is considered to be the start of the phases of the moon.

  25. Way to pay attention! Let’s quickly finish so we can get to some fun websites! YEAH!!!!

  26. Part Two Check with your teacher before going past this point.

  27. Waning Gibbous Sun • We lost just a little bit of the moon since the full moon. • So what is going to happen next?

  28. Last Quarter • If you guessed that we would be down to half a moon, you were right! We’re almost done! Sun

  29. Waning Crescent Sun • Look! We’re back to the little sliver of the moon. • So what moon phase would come next? a. Full moon b. Third quarter c. Waxing Crescent d. New Moon

  30. Are you sure? • Check that question out again 

  31. Nice Going! • Your ready to check out some really cool websites!!!

  32. Check these out! • There are a couple more sites I would like you to check out. Click on each of the links on the following slides. When you are done make sure you hit the X to close the window you are looking at when you are done.

  33. The First One… On this site move the mouse around and see the different moon phases. Then check yourself by clicking on the words Test Yourself. http://www.spaceday.org/conmgmt/index.php?option=displaypage&Itemid=156&op=page&SubMenu

  34. The Second One… This is the website that is just a game. Try it on the first level and see what you think! http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/interactives/moon/moon_challenge/moon_challenge.html

  35. Last one… • Go to the website: http://www.quia.com/rd/11412.html?AP_rand=286773661 • On this site you will find a quick quiz about the moon (lunar) phases. Please take the quiz. When you are done click on Check Answers. Do not click on I Give Up!!!!

  36. Great!!! • Make sure to tell your teacher how you did on this quiz! • I hope you have a better understanding about the different shapes we see in the sky.

  37. Oh and just in case… • You might be wondering: There has been no reported findings of cheese on the moon. So no, the moon is not made out of cheese  (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/07/0714_040714_moonfacts_2.html)
