Teacher Information • Instructional Objectives: • Performance  Students will learn to participate in a game of volleyball. • Conditions  After powerpoint, in-class lecture. • Criteria  Underhand serve, pass, & set on a women’s net students will play 6 vs. 6 and each student will demonstrate their passing, setting & serving with 80% accuracy. • Target Audience: • 9-10th graders • Learning Environment: • Basic information can be discussed in the classroom, but instruction should be also given on a court.

  5. History of Volleyball… • Created in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts • Morgan was a YMCA instructor • Volleyball was originally named “mintonette” • Intended for business men because it was less contact than other sports

  11. Rules & Regulations… • Requirements: • Surface must be a light color • Lines are 5cm (2”) thick, also light color • ‘Attack line’ or ‘10 ft line’ • Actually 9’10” • Court Dimesions • 18m x 9m (59’ x 29’6”)

  13. Nothing but Net • Net must be 1m wide & 9 ½- 10m long • 2.43m height for men’s net • 2.24m height for women’s’ net

  16. Antennae • Typically made out of fiberglass • 1.8m long, 10mm in diameter • Ball is automatically out of bounds if it touches • Ball must stay in between the two antenna while in play

  17. Scoring • Games can be played best 2 out of 3, or 3 of 5 • Play till 25, must win by two • Rally scoring  a point is scored every serve • 3rd or 5th game is played to 15 pts

  20. How to Play • 6 players allowed on each side • USAV allows 12 substitutions per set • Substitutions occur between attack line & scorer’s table • Players must remain in original position during rotation

  22. Setter • Main job is set to attackers to attempt a kill • Typically take 2nd ball • Main communicator within team • Can be in back or front row

  24. Backrow Players • Main job is to pass/dig the ball and send it to the setter • Typically take 1st ball • Restrictions: • Cannot jump to attack in front of 10’ line • Cannot be in front of front row players until after serve
